View Full Version : Converting 4:3 to 16:9
I was wondering if whilst using dif4u one could take advantage of re-encoding a non-anamorphic film into an anamorphic. I tend to do this in the avs script when doing it manually. Would IFOUpdate pick up the aspect ratio flag and update the original IFO?

IFOupdate does not update the AR in the IFO. For instance, if you were to encode something as 16:9 in CCE and then use the IFO that said it was 4:3 then the video would be squeezed during playback. That being said, I am unsure if you can arbitrarily change the AR using IFOedit. I've never had the need or inclination to do so.
Thanks Trilight.
However, on the weekend I tried it myself. Used DIF4U to rip the mounted iso. Then manually edited the avs file to to convert the non-anamorphic film to anamorphic. Then launched docce4u with robshota template. Pulled the assets into scenarist and continued as normal. Then as a last step I launched IFOEdit and converted the title aspect from 4:3 pan-scan to 16:9 automatic letterbox and lo and behold it all worked as it should. Tested on both my standalones, a shinco and a pioneer, also tested on a wharfedale and sony all work as expected.
The only issue I had was that the subs .sst file had non_drop in the header section. Since all my assets were drop frame I manually edited this to say drop. Subs are all perfectly in sync even at the end of the film.
Thanks for making such helpful tools.
I was wondering if some common templates could be implemented to dif4u for the avs files, in case if people such as myself would want a non-anamorphic widescreen to be coded as a widescreen. Just a thought.
One other small issue, first time round I forgot to extract the subs. Would have been nice if I could have just extracted the subs instead of going through the whole ripping process. Perhaps a selective continuation feature might be helpful, such that one could selectively opt to rip the subs alone or the audio alone. If you're wondering why not use subrip and just do the subs myself, I tried that for some reason subrip complained a few times about encrypted vobs, even though I had used the latest DVD-Decrypter 3.1.5 to create the iso. But DIF4U was able to extract them without any problems other than the non-drop flag.

Go take a look at the UberGuide on my site. Click on the part that references subs and you will find a link in there to the old manual process. There are instructions on using VobSub manually to extract subs.
