now i just ordered a sony dru500a and i'll be makin dvd backups. I was wondering if any backup will play on standalone players. I've read some and if a disc is a certain size u can make an exact copy and play that on a stand alone. But if the dvd is to big i read that you can cut out all the extras and just have the movie. If you go this route will the dvd-r still play on a stand alone player?
please dont flame me.. this is a hard question to search and i know doom9 regs always get pissy at everyone that asks questions. FYI i've taught myself divx and svcd without posting on this forum (just searching) cut me some slack :P

yes, it should work with most of the players, I have a lil problem with my Harman Kardon DVD 1 player so..... but why don´t you buy an RW så you can test the movies first before finalizing it on an R.
try these following softwares:
dvd2one - shareware, you can have the movie only in the demo
Instand Copy7 - shareware also - only he movie in the demo
and DVDshrink is all free, either keep entire disc or just the movie. with this you won´t be needing a decrypter but many chose to use the DVDdecrypter software, you need it otherwise to remove the copyprotection and it is a freeware
good luck

Also check DVDRHelp.com's DVD players (http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers) compatibility list (not sure if Doom9.org has its own list) to see if your DVD player(s) is(are) able to play R/RW discs.
Happy burning :)

I think there are also lists of which players play dvdr and what media they will play. When I purchased a player I looked for one that played everything.

i know some players dont play dvd-r but my question was a little unclear i guess..
let me reword it: assuming a standalone player will play a full backup of a dvd (extras and all) is it also guaranteed to play a backup with just the movie (all extras cut out)?

aslong as your player supports the media you use than yes it will work but if the dvd is larger you have more options then to just copy the movie you can encode the video to make it smaller using a number of utilities most found on this site as well as just stripping audio or sub streams you don't won't for those dvds that aren't that much over 4.37GB

NO! There are no guarantees when altering the contents of a DVD. Testing the altered DVD on a PC does not prove a standalone will play it either (although failure to play on the PC can be taken as proof that something is wrong). Therefore, since your burner can use RW disks you should get at least one for testing.

I'd suggest burning @ X1 (knowing that Sony-500 can burn much faster) for movie back up's especially if compressing a 2hr + film.
I have a Sony DVP-NS 305 entry level stand alone DVD player and it supports DVD-R/RW & DVD+R/RW , that would be a useful feature for playing back copies burnt using the Sony 500 as it burns in both formats.
