i've looked at a bunch of different guides now and just gotten myself more confused, I'm familiar with virtualdub but not any of the newer tools except for the mpeg2 transcode programs like dvd2one, instantcopy, etc

what I want to know is, is there an easy way for me to take a ripped dvd that is say 5gigs, rip out the audio streams I don't want, and encode it with divx5 to make an avi that is a gig or so

also, would it even be worth it to re-encode the audio or better to just leave it alone

what i'm wondering, is it feasible to put 2 or 3 dvd's on a dvdr in divx form and have them still be decent quality (I'm not up to date on how good the ratio is from mp3g2 > divx5 now), for example what kind of size output would be needed if the original movie was around 5gigs and nothing rippable with only one audio channel.

any help would be appreciated

Try starting with http://www.doom9.org/divx-encoding.htm -- you'll find a lot of guidance there.
