Mpeg1 -> Xvid

I've been trying to envode some MPEG1 videos (320x240) to XVID, however with little succes so far. CBR works, but 2Pass doesn't.

Either it will crash VDubMod with Error -100 at the beginning or after a few seconds, or it will produce files of about 100kb size.

I've tried the latest nics, koepis (+stable 0402), and umaniacs builds and the behaviour is the same. I'm using the default settings, but playing around with the settings didn't help either.

So does MPEG1->XVID actually work or am i trying the impossible?

This is a problem with VDubMod one would assume rather than XviD, XviD two pass works fine, so why it doesn't work in vdubmod with mpeg-1 can probably only really be answered by the VDubMod people.

As far as I can remember this has to do with 1st pass stats not being found. Are you encoding your second pass in the same directory of the first pass, and if so, have you checked your statsfile path ?

I disabled "Discard 1st Pass" and now it works.
I'm no XVID expert so please forgive me if this is a stupid question :), but sholdn't i be able to choose different parameters in 1st pass and 2nd pass (like lumi disabled in 1st, and enabled in 2nd)? That doesn't seem to work here.

No you cant change settings between passes.That will cause troubles to your avi

actually it still doesn't work. i get -100 errors with VHQ=1, and sometimes only with VHQ=0 (depending on the file) :confused: also chroma enabled gives error -100 with koepis build, but not with umaniacs latest insta-build :confused:

and 2nd pass isn't really two pass, as it only does one pass :confused: :confused:

You're right, your 2pass is no 2pass. When you choose not to discard first pass, he just spits out the constant quant 2 avi it created in first pass. The discard option is there if you have not so much hd space, so you cannot put out a quant 2 file, because they can get pretty big. Try setting a certain location for your statsfile in the XviD options. Absolute, no relative path. T.ex. C:\mymovie\mystats.stats.

You can try Vidomi. Just be sure to use RGB mode with
newer xvid builds.

ok tried the suggestions (except vidomi ;)) and here is how it works:

discard enabled: will make a file with 1kb/s (not an avi obviously)
discard disabled: only one pass

you see me: :confused: :confused: :)

i worked with VDub and Nandub before and never got such problems

I'd say no, this problem really springs from *something* with your statsfile, cause that's what error -100 means. And vdubmod doesn't do anything to the statsfile, so it's an XviD problem.

Error -100 somehow depends on (wrong?) settings in XviD (vhq, chroma and luma masking are involved). However it appears before VDubMod even processes the first frame.

I assume the other problem is unrelated to -100. I will do some more tests.

Yeah, I actually should have said "afaik" before it, cause it's only from personal experience, as the only time i've ran into a -100 was with a statsfile which xvid couldn't find (wrong partition). Anyway I'm pretty sure -100 is not because of VDubMod :).
