Minimum laptop CPU requirements to run Divx files

Hi,

I have a bunch of Divx 3.11 files on a CD that I would like to run on a laptop. The files are 640x480 in resolution (2000 video bitrate, 56k MP3 audio) and were created using Nandub.

Any idea what processor power I need to run these smoothly? Is a Pentium II adequate or do I need a P3? Thanks.

Back when I used divx a lot a friend of mine and I ran some tests to determine the minimum CPU requirement. Mind you, we are both AMD users - but the minimum for smooth playback of 720x480 30fps was a K6-2/500 (500MHz) I'm not sure how that translates to Pentiums, or what speed ranges II and III had. The K6-2 was the same generation as Pentium II, but able to get more work done per clock cycle.

A resolution of 640x480 and bitrate of 2000 would have been too much for my old PIII 450, I think. With it's PC 100 SDRAM it was able to play Divx 3.11 with resolutions up to 640xXXX (16:9 or cinemascope) and relatively low bitrates (~ below 1500).

My dad's Athlon 1000 with PC133 SDRAM (100MHz FSB) is able to play all Divx (including high resolution Divx5 with postprocessing on medium to high levels - also with AC3 sound).

Somewhere in between these two processors would be ok, I guess - but it better be closer to the Athlon than to the PIII 450...
