View Full Version : Macrovision pulsing in DVD Shrink ?

Is there a general problem with Macrovision DVD titles and DVD Shrink ? I tried a direct from disc DVD which had macrovision protection and on playing the backup it has pulsing in it, drop in picture and sound. I try a direct from disc non-macrovision DVD and all is fine. I know this sounds obvious, don't use direct from disc, but I wondered if anyone has had success with direct from disc Macrovision DVD backups ?

I thought macrovision is to prevent the output of the video as to prohibit recording to VCRs, capture cards, etc.

Well, I was checking the back of the DVDs and the only ones to pulse were the ones with the Macrovision logo. Maybe that is coincidence and perhaps it is another reason, I have only done a couple so I have not widly tested it. But it does look very much like a macrovision effect, pulsing picture and dipping sound (although I admit not as harsh or severe as macrovision normally is). I would have put it down to compression but it also happens on non-transcoded footage.

I know DVD Shrink doesn't remove Macrovision, so perhaps there is a small bug somewhere ? Maybe only on PAL DVDs ? I tried to view it via WinDVD, I have not tried via a normal DVD player yet.

are you doing Level 3 or above...that could be a problem. I only recommend doing Level 0,1, or 2.

One way to check for Macrovision is to roll down the picture with Vertical Sync and look for the telltale pulsing lines. Or you could rip with another ripper which is known to remove macrovision and compare.

Pulsing IS visible on macrovision protected video on most video monitors, despite Macrovision Inc's claim - it bugs the hell out of me so much I pass the output of my DVD player through a digital video mixer to remove it.

You will not see this on a computer monitor, Macrovision only affects analog outputs intended for television monitors.

If DVDShrink does not remove Macrovision, I'd suggest it be added to the todo list, it is not very difficult (for a program), simply zero out a certain byte in every NAV Pack.

Firstly, Mr Bass, I didn't need to do any compression as I mentioned I just re-authored a few titles off the discs without transcoding, so no levels were used. I have tried and experimented with levels too though, and I get the same result (which I would expect). I think I need to try more discs with Macrovision to be sure, I will update this thread tomorrow with some results. I will also try it by ripping with Decrypter first too, as I am currently using direct from disc mode.

Mpucoder, thanks for the advice. I am using a normal monitor though. As mentioned, it doesn't seem as severe as Macrovision normally is, but it certainly seems very Macrovision-like. It is watchable, but very annoying. I will also try some other player software, so far I have only tried WinDVD.

please rip all files in DVDDecrypter and make sure Macrovision is removed. Then process with dvdshrink and burn...your theory will be proved true or false.

I will update later today, but it seems Ishan is having the same problem, read the lower end of this thread : http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=50713

My problem is with WinDVD but that is pretty much the same as Power DVD.

Anyway, I will do as said and rip with a decrypter first. I will report back.
