Ok, so it's STILL way out of the reach of us amateurs, but it's interesting to see the price coming down so dramatically without losing a criminal number of features from Scenarist Professional.

Only one VTS and no DTS would be the major problems for most people here I guess.

Cheers for the price list, Mikel - not that I'm able to afford any of it!
I must say I do think Sonic have a cheek to make SonicCare compulsory when they are already charging you several thousand dollars for a license. Although I can see the benefits of the SonicCare package (unpgrades etc and customer support etc.), I see no reason why it should be made compulsory.
I'm afraid it smacks of corporate greed to me.

Yeah, here's the jargon from the homepage:

Sonic Debuts Scenarist® 3
Latest Advancements in DVD Added to Hollywood’s Choice for DVD Authoring
Scenarist 3 elevates DVD authoring to a higher level by providing facilities with more detailed authoring controls, such as advanced copy-and-paste functions that allow duplication of individual or entire DVD navigation command areas to accelerate complex title creation on a single system. A VTS Import/Export Manager – an advanced workflow management tool that allows complex projects to be distributed over multiple authoring seats in a true workgroup environment and then be merged into a single finished title – radically accelerates and streamlines the high-end authoring process.
New in Scenarist 3:
Advanced Copy and Paste of DVD Commands – In addition to the already rich and powerful copy and paste functions in Scenarist, users now have the ability to paste entire command sections from one command area to another, significantly streamlining the process of creating complex and feature-rich DVD titles.
Import and Export VTS – Sections of the finished project may be used in a new project and complex title authoring distributed across multiple authoring seats, providing significant time savings and yielding a more efficient authoring process.
Pan-Scan Video Support – Scenarist 3 enables any 16:9 encoded video to be imported, centering the image as intended.
Auto Update from Track Editor - Moving from a DVD Creator® or DVD Fusion authoring environment to Scenarist is facilitated with this new capability.
Improved Template Handling – Scenarist template functions are enhanced with additional integration into the workflow, improving the efficiency of creating DVD box sets, preparing titles prior to receiving video and audio assets, or creating a standardized authoring template from which to start new projects.
Enhanced Simulation Window - With significant enhancements and the introduction of a new Menu Editor and Command Editor, Scenarist 3 lets users focus on the task they are performing. By using specialized editors for the most frequently needed tasks, programming a DVD is made even simpler.
Expanded DVD Recorder support – Scenarist 3 adds support for a large number of DVD and CD writing devices and support for all currently available formats, including DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-R and DVD+R as well as writing to CD media.
"Scenarist 3 delivers significant new capabilities for professional DVD title production, control and delivery,” said Nicolai Otto, Sonic Scenarist Product Manager. “No other system matches the power over the DVD specification and title creation efficiency that is designed into Scenarist – this latest version resets the benchmark for professional DVD production."
Scenarist 3 is targeted to be available for delivery in April 2003, with systems ranging in price from $4,999 to $35,000.

Actually, I'm really looking forward to Scenarist version 3, and I can't wait for Sonic to ship it out to me as soon as they release it. I'm confident that they'll accept my 'IOU' for $35,000, since I told them that I need to allocate my existing funds towards Scenarist training costs! :D

oh yes, we can't wait to see version 3. Before making a big decission I'd get a demonstration of it at the distributor offices. One thing I don't get is that they talk about HD-DVD (the high-definition thing that's coming out on Sonic's site) will that be on blu-ray. Like in version 3 can you author a HD-DVD master it to DLT or what? for HD i belive we will have to upgrade almost all of our equipment. Encoder Board, etc. for the HD-DVD I know it doesen't state that on "what's new in Scenarist 3" but I think i read it somewhere on sonic's site relating to scenarist. Please shed some light.
thanx! deePA :)

hmm, i may have to talk to the boss soon about getting new authoring software ;)
Virtuoso 2.5 is probably past its usability (especially with the 16:9 menu bug).
does anyone know if scen 3 will adopt a more reeldvd like 'pleasant' look, rather than the raw look it has currently (it still looks like it was made for NT3.51)

I don't actually know the answer to that question, but I wouldn't mind betting that if they've taken the time and trouble to re-jig the menu editor (although it remains to be seen to what extent they've altered it), they'll probably also have done a little cosmetic work on the interface as a whole. If they haven't, it will have been a wasted opportunity, and will not give such an impact to the release as it might have done. Having said that, I don't reckon they'll go as far as making it look like ReelDVD, simply because Scenarist's austere look somehow (paradoxically) 'looks' more expensive than ReelDVD's, IMHO. At the end of the day, I'm just dying to see what they've done with the menu editor, cos anything that makes Scenarist more user-friendly must surely be welcomed.
P.S. if you can get your boss to let you use Scenarist on a daily basis, you'll be the envy of many here on the forums!
