I did a guide last night as well, though it is not as indepth perse as MrBass here, it is geared towards the newbie. I included just about every window and while it is not as good as a genuine Doom9 guide, it could be used to help out a less than veteran person (which is the goal). It is as remedial as I could make it.

Here is the guide, (I hate Geocities too).

http://www.geocities.com/ashasha3

(you may need to cut and paste, Geocities doesn't always link well.)

Hope that it helps someone. I am pretty sure that I will put up a different one since it is addressed so well in the above thread. It will probably be based on SpruceUp and making some buttons in PShop and doing menus or something. I have been working on that lately and have a pretty nice method worked out that seems to be fast and effective. I want to do something, I feel like I owe the community after all of the work and help I have received over the years. If I could write SW I would, but I can't so I guess I can just try to ease a bit of the workload for the guys writing the code. The less time you guys spend answering easy questions is time that could be getting that new bug worked out.

By the way, i am not a true "newbie" here, it's been a few years since I posted. I never registered after the forum changed...lazy and all of my questions are usualy answered by doing a search or beating my head against the wall. ;) That 5 day wait to post is a killer, especially with all of the new stuff out the last few weeks.

nice guide Gooly...I added a link to your guide at the bottom. I love your explanations of the different Levels of compression...those are right on.

Thanks for the compliment and link. I put a link to yours on the TOP of my page. Hope you don't mind.

Anyway I still can't get the formula right at the bottom of your page. Maybe someone should write a "mass of the ass" calculator, I am sure that it would be used alot. :D

The MMO guide says to always leave all subtitle streams, does that mean DVDShrink will crash or something if you attempt to remove streams? Is it just because they don't take up much space? Some DVD's have like 10 or 15 streams, seems like they could add up...

yes they don't take up much space is one reason....if there are more than 5 or so subs then by all means remove some of them. It won't crash if you remove them all.

Main reason is movies like Sum of All Fears for example. If you removed all subtitles and then a few parts throughout the movie when they speak Russian you won't get any subs during those few parts and you'll be at a loss trying to understand some key parts of the movie.

Many people think the subs for just a few parts of the movie are encoded within the video stream but that's not true. Another reason is sometimes it'll show 0x20 and 0x21 both English (back to the future) and if you uncheck 0x21 then it won't show English subs at all. Rather than try to explain all this I simply said always keep all subs.

great guide, mrbass

I didn't get a chance to read sasha's guide (unavailable), but I think you should update the guide to mention the fact that with DVDShrink, after you chop off the credits, you can add the credits individually as a second video file, and choose a different compression level (level 8 or whatever). That way, you can still attempt to keep the parts of the movie you want without sacrificing the quality of the important parts.

nah I like to try to KISS keep it simple stuff.
Sometimes when trying to add say just one etra feature that create vmg error comes up.

Say you get 300MB extra by chopping credits. Well if you do what you say and choose Level 8 compression can you even read the text. Would still movie even work or would it be hard to follow. You won't lose the 30 to 40MB (just guessing) of audio that you could with just simply chopping off credits.

Anyway they can read about stuff like that in forums...it is a useful technique (and no I didn't think of it till you mentioned it) and some will probably do what you say.

Sorry if I came off as a bit pushy with my comment. After thinking about it, I agree with you that adding in that technique into the guide will probably confuse more than help. I didn't much explore the stability of it, either. Alas, that is why I don't write guides, I only read them :) .

I, for one, appreciate the time and effort it takes to make guides to help all who need help understanding what to do and what not to do. A program, regardless of it's power or functions, is useless unless you understand what it's doing. The guides that are posted help in understanding this and are appreciated
