This has probably been asked before, but I can't find it, sorry :).

Playback of DVDs, particularly commercial ones seems to be fairly poor on all software players that I've tried (powerdvd, cinemaster, windvd, etc). Mainly it's fog and darker scenes that look poor due to the colors stepping rather than blending.

System for playback is a 1.7GHz with Nvidia GF4-440 in 32bit color mode.

Is it my video card or limitations of software players that causes this?

two suggestions for you

1. http://www.theatertek.com/

2. Get an ATi Video card.

The problem you describe is a video card issue. Get a newer, 7200 or better ATI Radeon card.

If you have Cinemaster, you have the same or same family of video decoders. Personally, I do think you will notice much difference. Using TheaterTek and a sub-par video card is not going to improve things much.
