View Full Version : OggMachine - Hybridgain or MaxGain?

When encoding from ac3 to ogg, I've always used the maxgain option normalizing to 97% (-g 0.97). Will using the hybrid gain option instead produce better results?
The commandline I always use is -
"C:\Utilities\DivX Tools\OGG Stuff\Ogg Machine\BeSweet.exe" -core( -input "file" -output "file" -azid( -g 0.97 -L -3db -c normal -s surround ) -ota( -d 0 ) -ogg( -q 0.350 ) -profile( The OggMachine v0.61 )
Are there any options I should change to increase quality?
Thanks

Normalizing files for vorbis encoding is dangerous. This only increases the chance that they will clip during the vorbis decode stage. The safest way to maximize the volume with ogg, is to apply vorbisgain (replaygain) after the encoding is complete. The handy GUI utility WinVorbis includes vorbisgain support. I "gain" oggs after I have encoded with BeSweet, and the result is always perfect. VorbisDS filters from everwicked support replaygain info, so ogm files are also amplified using this method.

i'm hardly here. search the forum for full info about this.

Yeah, LWING gain is applied when post is enabled. OggDS does indeed recognize either variety. Personally I prefer the replaygain standard. For both ogm and ogg, track gain (and album gain, when encoding music) can come in handy. I guess it is up to the user, but for the flexibility in playback (winamp included) I tend to stick with vorbisgain as my post-gain solution.

so what method should I use when encoding to OGG, should I leave the gain option out of the encoding process altogether and use an external program? I've never noticed any audible clipping using -g 0.97 it seems fine to me.

keep in mind that BeSweet's postgain (LWING) is as well supported by winamp. further more, the hybridgain method combines pregain along with postgain. if you'd read old posts about it, you might find this combination to be a preferable method.

after reading the above brief discussion, you can now decide for yourself.. :D
