View Full Version : Using nandub to split avi causes video lockup

Hi, I am using Gordianknot 0.28 alpha 8, vdubmod 1.4.13, the latest mpeg2dec3.dll (if that helps). nandub v1.0rc2.

I can create a single .avi file of the dvd movie fine of ~ 1Gig. Then, so that I can fit it on CD's I used nandub to do a direct stream copy and set the breakpoint to a keyframe. The problem is that the original movie and the 1st half of the split movie now only plays ~10 seconds with video then freezes on that frame but comtinues to play the sound. The second half of the movie has the video freeze on the very first frame but lets audio continue to play. (~10 seconds into the movie is where the second keyframe would be, right? keyframe =300 frames @23.976b I think))

I am especially confused as to why the original avi doesnt run anymore when it did before I used nandub. Also, when I open the avi in virtualdub, I can see all the frames throughout the files. It is only in win media player and divx player 2.0alpha that video locks up.

I hope I have explained this correctly. Anyone know what I screwed up?

nandub is known to cause problems with vbr-mp3 audio. it is not recommendet to use anymore. you can do exactly the same process in virtualdubmod. or avimuxgui can handle the job pretty well too.

May I ask what these known problems are? I have had no problems with VBR-MP3 audio and NanDub ever.

Who is making these recommendations. Again, I have heard nothing of the sort.

Here, you have done an excellent job of skirting the issue. You offer no real solution or a cause.

Fucamaroo clearly states that his sound keeps playing and the problem is with the VIDEO, so I highly doubt that your perceived problems with VBR-MP3 is the problem with his video. This also doesnt explain why the same problem occurs with the original AVI, which shouldnt be changed during a split operation.

@Fucamaroo - If I were you, I would uninstall all installed video and audio codecs and then only reinstall the ones you need. If using DivX5, then DO NOT install DivX4. At this point I dont understand exactly what is going on, but this should help you.

you have to know that actually avi files do not even support vbr-mp3. it is a hack. anyway if you mux the audio with nandub and then burn it to CD or play it from your HD it works perfectly. BUT if you mux it and then reload the file to split it (e.g. when making 2 CDs) nandub (and virtualdub) detect that something is 'wrong' with the audio and try to fix it. but this fixing function has been built for badly muxed cbr mp3 and not vbr. thus it is screwing things up rather than fixing them. the result is an almost always out of sync audio and frequently the video avi does not play correctly, expecially in WMP

i do and i've read quite a few posts in this forum recommending the same. nandub is great for producing SBC encodings but everything else can be accomplished better in other ways!

i agree the answer was a little short, but i recommended using avimuxgui or virtualdubmod for muxing.

see above... the problem shouldn't but still does occur.

generally a good idea, but if the same video was playing fine i doubt this will change anything.

well good that you say that. how can you say my answer is not helping him at all if you do not even understand the problem? strange....

@fucamaroo: i recommend you demux the file (if possible the file as a whole , befor you split it) and remux it with avimuxgui (download in the doom9 downloads section) you can mux and split the file in one process. i for my part have never had any sync/cutting problems with it.

Thanks for the help. I reinstalled everything and am now trying this again. It took me a while to get all the files where they needed to be and in the right install order the first time so I figure a new install would be good. (That might have something to do with it...I dunno). I'll let you know in 6 hours when the movie is done if it worked. :-)
