Hi sorry just a quick question,

Why do people want to use DVD2SVCD? Is SVCD quality better than VCD?

Are rips of DVDs done this way have a better quality than the DivX way of encoding or are they the same?

Would it take up more discs (700mb 80mins) if it was done the DVD2SVCD way rather than the DIVx? Why the preference then?

Why don't people just do it the DivX way instead?

Cheers.

Yes it is much better in quality. Also it supports selectable subtitles and 2 audio streams.

That depends highly on the person watching. For instance, mostly divx is watched on the computer monitor, whereas SVCD is viewed on the TV.

Cheers. There are many reasons for and against it. Among those for:

1. Many DVD players support SVCD you therefore have the leisure of watching your movies in the living room. (Probably primereason #1)
2. You have the possibilities of selectable subtitles and 2 audio streams.
3. Basicly you have the same possibilities with SVCD as you have with a DVD, just limited.
4. It is also more versatile and you just have the one standard, however it is a very flexible standard.
5. You can lent out your movies to folks if they have either a computer or a SVCD compatible DVD player.
6. It's a great way to make backups of your kids DVD's. And then let them have the SVCD's to play with instead keeping the DVD's in a safe place.
7. CVD format size (352 * 480/576) is supported both by DVD and SVCD. Igf you make your SVCD's in that format it's easy to move them to DVD-R(W) if you ever buy a DVD Writer. Without loosing much in quality because you don't have to reencode.

Fortunatly this is in the Basics topic

We use SVCD because we can play that on our stand-alone DVD player. We can't do that with DivX.

SVCD is better than VCD.

If you want to play movies only on your PC, stick with DivX or Xvid
