virtualdub plays MPG fine, nothing else will...

i downloaded a handful of shady MPGs (mpeg-1) off newsgroups ... i say shady because i'm not sure if the source was P2P or not ... but anywho, these seem to play alright ONLY in VirtualDub. they are short by 80% of their playtime and glitch out (get stuttery, freeze) at the end in EVERYTHING else... WMP7(?) (XP's stock player), WMP 6.4, Zoom Player (latest), The Core Media Player (latest), Winamp 2.90, and my fave, Media Player Classic (6.4.4.2 and just about any other version i've tried)...

anyone else had these problems?

hmm now there's an interesting thing... it doesn't happen on the other computer running Win2K (mine is XP)

could it be PowerDVD XP or WinDVD Platinum that i run? =( i need them to play SVCDs...

what does this have to do with illegally downloaded movies? if you must know these are various news broadcasts and possibly just plain joined MPEGs of news shorts. as for the link to the forum rules, i've looked for at least two hours on this subject here and various other boards. please clarify what you mean by this reply.

when i say shady, i mean unknown encoder, unknown quality, unknown encoding method, unknown amount of corruption. (but i'm pretty sure they're clean; no one else has complained about them)

i think that piracy link should be made a sticky in all forums. so people don't get told after the damage is done. So many people come along and get the wrong end of the stick , it would be nice not to think ...oops another "help me with my warez" post , "will this be the post that makes doom9 get shut down?"
