is there some timeline for xvid of what's to come? or will it stay in alpha stage forever by nature of the project

I sure hope they stamp out a "stable" build at some point soon...
I'd love to start using xvid over Divx Pro. But I wont use it for Tv capture archiving until I know for sure they wont change something and break decoding on things encoded with an unstable build.
They have come along way from the last stable build.
But I can wait :D

Maybe you'd like to know that everything encoded with 'unstable' version can be decoded with FFDShow from the 09/22/2002 (7 months old) without any problem (QPel, BF, GMC, etc - not an XviD option :D).
So I guess they "they wont change something and break decoding on things encoded with an unstable build"; if they should have done such things, it would have been done a long time ago.

-h264
-dynamic hpel/qpel/h264 decision :D
oops I forgot one: vhq: ultimate mode :D :D :D
i dream ... ;)

I thought b-frames and vhq got along well together?

They do, at least with my encodes.

There isn't a problem, just that VHQ is only performed on P frames.
