Hello
I have followed the guide as close as I could to rip a movie, but I don't know how to add the subtitles to a movie, i normally have added them but there's nothing and there's a *.mv file in the folder i put the finished movie,
so my question is how do i do to add the subtitles in a movie ripped by r4r and completed in gordian knot?
thank you

The .mv file is a "motion vector" file, which was used by DivX during video encoding.

First:

There are two methods for using subtitles with Gordian Knot.

One method is to "burn" the subtitles into the video during encoding. In that way, the subtitles become part of the video itself.

The other method is to keep the subtitles in a separate file, and use either an AVI player that supports subtitle files, or to install and use DirectVobsub, which can be used to display the subtitles with any AVI player.

Burning in simplifies playback, but the general consensus is you get better image quality keeping the subtitles separate.

GKnot and subtitles:

Gknot supports both methods. With either method, the subtitles are first extracted from the .vob set, and placed in a separate directory that you must have created in advance. Two files are created, a .sub and an .ifo file (this is different then the DVD's .ifo files). This is done from the Subtitles tab in Gknot, using the Configure button, which will start the Vobsub configuration procedure as described in the Vobsub Guide (http://www.doom9.org/dvobsub.htm).

If these files are later moved into the same folder as your .avi file, and have the same filename as the .avi, DirectVobsub will start when you begin playing the .avi, and subtitles will appear.

If, instead, you wish to burn the subtitiles, you must select the .ifo file created by Vobsub as described in the Gknot guide you've already read.

Things in the Gknot guide have changed a little bit, as the new Robot4Rip is now available, but I haven't had a chance to play with it yet.

Hi! yet another newbie to ripping...

It's taken me 1 week to come to grips with basic ripping and encoding with r4r and gknot, but the results have been well worth it... much more satisfying than using flask...

But...

Burning permanent subtitles into the avi are still a problem. Ive checked out chipzollers thread subtitle guide isn't producing results (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=46328)
in the Subtitle forum, and this thread, neither of which has produced a satifactory answer. I can get non-permanent subtitles no problem. But I want permanent subs...

r4r uses VobSub (Ive also run this step manually), which produces the following files: vobsub.param, ####.idx and a ####.sub file. selecting any of these files in the gknot select vobsub stage when encoding does nothing, as I'm a newb and still learning the basics I just follow the gknot guide, I do not know how to add scripts into avisynth or virtual dub, in fact I don't know what avisynth is!. The
DivX5 in Gordian Knot (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/gknot-main3.htm) says to select the .ifo file that vobsub created, however as I've just explained there is NO .ifo file.

Anyhelp for the Newbs would be appreciated.

You should still have a .ifo file, it should be created when you rip the DVD. Go into the DVD Decrypter program and tell it to rip the .ifo then re rip your DVD so that you have a .ifo

Hi-

I don't know if this is you guys problem or not. But this is from yesterday's news page:
Robot4Rip 0.3 supports non AC3 soundtracks (activate it via edit - enable all audio tracks, be careful: you have to create your own audio profiles), a bug in the auto force-film detection has been fixed, VobSub now also works on Win9x/ME and there are some cosmetic improvements.
So if you're on 9x/ME, then try the latest version and see if it works now for you.

Hi guys, Yeah, I got an ifo file when I ripped the DVD, but Ive selected that file as well in the add subtitles stage... Still no good....

I'm on a XP system so I shouldnt have the win98/ME problem.

Has anyone successfully added subtitles permanently using gknot syspack 1 and rippack 0.27 and r4r 0.2b???

I dont think the problem is r4r and I don't think the prob is vobsub either cause I can actually get non-perm subs...

Maybe something in my gknot install is screwy... I'll play around with that...

Other thing to remember is that there are alot of us that are newbs and we don't realise there are steps that you guys do without thinking about that we don't know exist...

One thing I have noticed is that my vdub and nandub don't have the subtitles filter. I have tried to add them manually by changing the file name as per Gknots old subtitle VobSub Guide... : vobsub.dll to your VirtualDub/Plugins directory and rename it to vobsub.vdf but virtual dub complains that it isn't a virtual dub pluggin...

Thanks for your replys guys, they ARE apprecicated...

Hi-

One thing I have noticed is that my vdub and nandub don't have the subtitles filter.

Well, I can answer that one. When installing the VobSub portion of GKnot, you have to do a custom install of VobSub, and then check both "VobSub For VirtualDub" and "TextSub for VirtualDub and AviSynth". So why don't you just reinstall VobSub 2.23 (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Subtitles/VobSub_2.23.exe) and you should be all set. Stick vobsub.vdf in Nandub manually. TextSub allows you to burn subs in different formats (.srt and .ssa) into your videos.

Has anyone successfully added subtitles permanently using gknot syspack 1 and rippack 0.27 and r4r 0.2b???

No, but I don't burn in my subs, so I haven't tried. Check your .idx and .sub files and make sure there's something inside them (open the .idx in Notepad). If it's OK, then when adding subs to the .avs when it's being created by GKnot, are you hitting that "Select VobSub Files" button, and then selecting the .idx file? And do you then do a preview and make sure that you have subs? Or you can open the finished .avs in VDub or Nandub and check that way. If worse comes to worst, and Robot4Rip doesn't create them for you, then try and do it in the Subtitles Tab-Configure of GKnot. Let me know how it goes. If you can get them from GKnot, but not from Robot4Rip, there may be a bug in Robot4Rip.

Ahah.. the missing link.. I now have the vobsub filters.. I'll tell you how it goes tomorrow...

Thanks guys, esp kudos to manono that spotted the newb error...
