I have searched and cannot find an answer to this issue. I am new to this so excuse my ignorance on the terminolgy. I am using DVD2SVCD to backup some of my DVDs and notice that I get small blocks that appear in the video at different times in my copies. It is very similiar to when your digital cable starts getting flacky and you see the squares on your screen. I have followed the guide to using DVD2SVCD from this forum and am using CCE 2.5 but still cannot resolve the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

hi and welcome to the forum
this is perfectly normal. it is caused by a lack of bitrate for the amount of video data. in other words if you want better quality go for more cds... (:
you can decrease the amount of blocks by using smoothing filters but this is always connected with a loss of detail.

Hi-

To further elaborate: You should mount the Bin-Cues with Daemon Tools and see if they're OK or not. If they're OK, but the burned SVCDs aren't, then there's a good chance that your burning software is at fault. There's more information about both in the Stickys/Q&As/FAQs in the SVCD Basics Forum.

If this flakiness occurs at the end of the discs, then it's almost certainly the fault of the burning software. If the blocks occur throughout the disc, particularly during motion/action scenes, then it's as killingspree said. One answer for that is to encode for an extra CD. That is, if you're trying to put a movie on 1 CD, then go for 2 CDs. If you're trying to put a long movie on 2 CDs, then go for 3 CDs. And always take advantage of the multi-pass feature of CCE. Using 4 or 5 passes can improve the outcome.

Hi Steve. :)
