I've tried to search for posts concerning this, but i couldn't find any. I just tried to rip my first dvd last week. I used GordianKnot and followed the walkthrough (as far as i could tell) to the letter. However, when i went to watch my finished product, the first 50 min were perfect quality, the next 70 or 80 minutes however are terrible. I retried making it adjusting various things that i thought could possibly be the problem but nothing worked.

Could it be something to do with the movie itself (it was a knights tale) or am i just doing somethign terribly wrong?? Thanks for your help!! :)

hi and welcome to the forum...
well i haven't seen the movie yet so i can't tell if it is a dvd related problem or not.
but four things:
a) have you done a compressability check? the value should be at least 40 better around 50 to 60 %... if it is too low (below 40) i would go for a higher bitrate...
b) what is the bitrate you used? did you go for one or 2 CDs?
c) did you touch the bitrate modulation settings during divx setup it could be that it is switched to a wrong setting (e.g. shifting the bitrate too far towards low or high motion scenes)
d) did you use the divx pro settings... if yes try either with only Bframes turned on or even better switch them off completely, perhaps they are causing a bug

this can all affect the quality of the encoded movie. in my opinion it the quality loss towards the end could have to do with the amount of action (fast movement) in the movie. these scenes require more bitrate and if they occure too frequent a noticable quality loss even at a seemingly high enough bitrate (1000+) can happen. therefore do the compressability check.

hope this helps

PS: you can find information on a manual comp check here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44414)
