View Full Version : Problems with 5.1 (volume too low) using DVD2SVCD

Hello!

Ppl probably posted about similar problems but I didn't find a solution to mine.

I am using DVD2SVCD and I want to have 5.1 sound in two languages. The Output file is synch but the volume is too low. Compressing the movie in stereo doesn't give low volume. The volume there is fine.

So what matters here? Is it the sound card (onboard) or is it a problem of DVD2SVCD using besweet. Are there some parameters to raise the volume? I use the default settings.

Greets,

5.1 in two languages?

What kind of encoding target do you have? SVCD with two 5.1 MPEG audio streams? This seems a little bit strange to me, as this would involve 2x 384 kBit/s audio... I don't think this works too well.

Did you have a look at the logfiles that BeSweet generated?

Here is one of two logfiles. It doesn't look like having errors but it sounds crappy. The bitrate setting in DVD2SVCD was set to 224 kbps. Is it too little?

224 kBit/s for 5.1 MPEG audio => this is a no go!

You may get stereo from 192 kBit/s at least, so guess what you need for 6 discrete channels. No, you need 384 kBit/s, that's the way to go, but I think two of them on one SVCD cuts the max video bitrate way too much. You have to find another way I think (buy a DVD burner and use AC3).

If you've got a DPL II capable hardware decoder you can activate the surround2 downmix in BeSweet and use 2 times 192 kBit stereo MP2. Maybe you can hear the difference to discrete 6 channel audio, but it's better than nothing. Or you just have one soundtrack with 6 channels, it's up to you.

P.S.: There is no problem with BeSweet, the encoding is done by a program called pub_enc.exe, look in the MPEG5.1 subfolder.

Well, thanks for information.

I'll probably go with stereo sound because I don't want to miss one of the two audio tracks.

Another solution would be to keep the sound and use two cds but then the total bitrate would be too high to comply with the standards.

Well, I think DPL II isn't too bad, if you don't listen to classical music on your SVCDs. I think for most action movies you still get pretty good surround information. I only can test this with WinDVD 4 which has DPL II decoder built in, that works pretty well for SVCD. However you have to decide for yourself.
