Hi, I'm trying to rip the Neon Genesis Evangelion series from DVD to DivX and the problem I'm having is that, because of the nature of my ripping (I rip by chapter so I can skip the opening and closing sequences), my subtitles are WAY off sync. For example, I rip chapter 2 and 3 and when I look into the subtitle files, the subtitles will not take into consideration that I have eliminated chapter 1 and thus the subtitles will come up 1 chapter later. Can anyone tell me how I'm supposed to fix these?
First we need to know what kind of subtitles you use. Vobsub or Subrip?
Have you considered skipping the opening and closing after with suitable program? That's what I'd do.

I'm using Gordian Knot which uses VobSub, I think.
I tried seperating the opening and closing from the AVI after everything was finished, but this proved to be very inaccurate. What would happen was that even if I specified the EXACT time the opening ended, the program I used (I used VirtualDub or NanDub) would include the last few seconds of the opening and thus I would get very untidy rips (and I like to be tidy)

Hi-
One way to fix it is to adjust the delay in the .idx file. At least I think it's the .idx. I don't have one handy to check right now.
Another way is similar to what N_F suggested, and doesn't require messing with the subs delay. That is to rip the whole episode, and then use the Trim command in your .avs in order to isolate just the part you want.
Another way, and the easiest of all (but only if you use DivX3.11), is to use GKnot after the first pass to insert keyframes at the places you want to cut, so that they'll split at the right place when you're done.
Vobsub will give you permanent subtitles, but I guess you already know that. Anyway, if I remember correctly there is an option in the vobsub configuration where you can specify a delay. Here you should insert a negative value equal to the length of the first chapter.
Note: I don't have the program installed on this computer so I can't check if the box is even there. If it's not I suspect you'll have to change the value in the .idx (?) file (just open it in notepad). I'll check tonight and get back to you tomorrow if it's not already fixed (I'm sure someone here knows by heart, I haven't used Vobsub in half a year so I'm not sure).
The reason you don't get the cut exact when using is VirtualDub is that you didn't make it at a keyframe. There are ways to "fix" this, but it's probably not worth the effort if your current method works fine (are you sure the 1st chapter only contains the opening? I know I'd be a bit annoyed if I later discovered I was missing a few seconds of the beginning or end).
Edit: I'll have to be faster the next time :)

Hi-
Yeah, you're right, N_F. There's a delay box in the VobSub configuration. Maybe that's the easiest way. I had to go look, as I don't use VobSub anymore either (except for the messy subs in Excel Saga).

Hi, thanks for all your help guys.
I checked gordian knot and they have an option called "time offset", but its in milliseconds (and the opening for evangelion is a good 2-3 minutes). So I think I'll go with your other suggested method of editing the .idx file.
Thanks for your help again, guys.
