Weird Vob's

Well I have a few DVDs I want to backup( 3000 miles to graceland, face-off, and saving private ryan). When i look at these DVDs it shows the VOBs as VTS 1.VOB and VTS 2.Vob as being 1 gig in size, then shows VTS 3.VOB as being are 400 megs, then reverts back to 1 gig for VTS 4, 5, 6. Does anyone have an idea as why this is?? I tried backing up my DVDs even with this "flaw" to no avail. I'm curious as to why this happened? The original DVD plays fine even with the weird VOBs. Has anyone else had this problem??

This is typical for dual layer DVD's. Shorter VOB's are simple last ones on first layer, and size is such to fill it to the end, and not spread to second layer.

But why is it when I complile my new dvd after encoding, it doesnt work properly? how can i overcome this??

well man i have to more than a few movies, so its not a beginners thing.
the tools i use are, cce, dvdmaestro, ifoedit and update, chapterxtractor, what else do you want to know??

Having a small VOB is no problem. It never was for me anyway and I didn't have to do anything special about it. If you experience problems, you might want to try tools like DoItFast4u that automate the demux. Works like a breeze.

Now, you seem to think your final DVD doesn't work because of the initial irregular VOB size (but you don't explain "how" it doesn't work). I don't think it has anything to see with this but probably with some mistake somewhere in the reauthoring steps. Here again I would suggest using DOiTFAst4u and DoCCE4U to automate the process as much as possible. THen have a look at the MAestro guides to be sure you respect the initial DVD structure at reauthoring time, and IFOUpdate guides to be sure you update your original IFOs accurately.

If you need help, you'll have to explain in all details the steps you follow from ripping to reauthoring. And also explain the final incorrect behaviour of your DVD so we can try to understand where the problem may come from.

As for this being a "beginners" thing or not, that's not relevant here. Just give some details.

Plus this is probably more related to the authoring forum.

well i wish i could remember what was exactly wrong with my dvd, i did it a few weeks ago before i had access to posting threads on doom9. i can tell you what i think went wrong but then again i dont want to give false information. im pretty sure its not how i authored because i do the same thing on all dvds that i have done(before these movies and i am still doing them now). i will have to wait here and finish what movies i am doing now and get back to you on this for exact error information. thanks for your time so far guys and i hope to find the answers soon! :)
as far as this being the wrong thread, my initial question was just why did the different vob file sizes change in mid vts.vob?
