View Full Version : VCD authoring: file system and playback compliancy

I have authored several VCDs and always used what one is supposed to use for 2.0 (9660 file system with level2 relaxations/restrictions) but also tried Joliet secondary descriptors. I notice that the .dat files have a different header when I do so which renders them unplayable in most common Windows apps run directly from source. DVD playback is possible but appears corrupt (software DVD playback that is).

I'm wondering, I haven't yet tried these out on a hardware setting as on a freestanding player, but I know my VCDs without Joliet work fine in Windows (software playback) as well on hardware playback (obviously).

Has anyone else experienced this problem?
I expected this but wanted to know if with Joliet they would still work on hardware players or whether it was player specific.

The VCD Spec. was introduced in eraly/middle 1990's. At that time there was no windows 95(thus the joliet file system) so keep on mind and use the ISO9660 char-set. All other try will be waste time and money.

Yes, you are right about not using Joliet format.

Does this mean that ISO 9660 relaxations can thus be applied sucessfully?

"ISO 9660 relaxations" is not equal to "Joliet" which is another file system on CD or a co-existed file sytem on CD. "ISO 9660 relaxations" relaxes only the length of filename and pathnames etc. But not another file system ID, with will cause a rejection by the firmware of a dvd player...

Yes, this I know. Joliet (also called RockRidge?) is another "file system" or a different way of storing with changes the ISO 9660 filesystem.
