I hope the title is descriptive enough for folks to search on.
Technically, this should be under "VFAPI Plug-ins" or perhaps, "TMpgENC", but newbies might not find it those locations.
When I originally had this issue, I read through nearly 5216 posts based on the TMpgENC error message, ".avi cannot open or unsupported". There were 2 possible resolutions:
1. Your .avi is DV Type 1 and you need to convert the .avi.
- or
2. You need to change the priority of the VFAPI plug-in.
Number 2 is the closest to being "correct", but needs further explanation as given below.
Here was the original problem: After using DVD2SVCD, I found that I could no longer open the .avi files I'd created in Virtual Dub with either the PicVideo or HuffyAV codices in TMpgENC. "blah.avi: cannot open or unsupported". It drove me crazy but building on the 2nd possible solution I found on this forum, I was able to resolve the issue.
Simply increasing the priority of some of the pertinent VFAPI plug-ins does not resolve the issue. RESETTING THEM TO THEIR ORIGINAL VALUES does.
Cancel out of the TMpgENC "wizard". Go to "Options", "environmental settings". Click on the "VFAPI Plug-ins" tab. Right click on *any* one plug-in and choose "Reset to original values". I believe that either avisynth or avi2 is set to a "3" when used by DVD2SVCD. In any event, once you reset this to its original setting of "0", you will find that your .avi files created with PicVideo or HuffyAV (and perhaps other compression codecs) will now open just dandy.
I posted this because this problem drove me nuts and I spent over a week trying to resolve something that now seems so trivial I could kick myself. But it was such a show-stopper that hopefully, when someone else takes the time to do a search, they'll find this!
