Subtitle & Multiple Audio Tracks

Before I start DVD2SVCD is a very very very excellent program, a very hlpful program for newbies like me.


I selected to Rip the Subtitles and according to the log they do get ripped and processed, because I have a couple of files, and I see a file that is Muxed with bbMPEG with Subs added. Now I checked to see if my player supports subs or not, and the good thing is that it does, but it doesn't support CVD subtitles. I tested it the Mpeg2 on PowerDVD and the Subtitle Option is greyed out, I used Daemon Tools to see the image file that was created as well, and still greyed out. Now since I'm not sure if I'm doing it the right way but, I think the program doesn't seem to be adding the subtitles correctly, I have decided to add the subtitles manually, I have the .SUB files, and the txt files which were created by the program and document the appropriate timings for the subs, the MPeg2's are already created.
I searched and searched around for guides on multiplexing .sub files, and the only ones I find are relating to I-Author which cannot be apparently found, and I searched around the Forums aswell, still no luck. So my basic question is how would I add .sub files or multiplex them with the Mpeg2's that are already created.

My second question is ...that I have a commentary on the DVD, now when main menu starts up and the program locates 3 audio streams,

The 3rd stream is the Commentary because the second one is already selected, I have numerous guides that "explain" what to do and that's it, even the guides on Doom only somewhat "explain" what your doing, but not really going into detail as to what options you have to select to rip the second audio stream, I also looked around in the guides for the multiple Audio Streams Adding guide, and yet again, it's I-Author again...:rolleyes: so could someone explain me as to what to select IF I want to rip out the second Audio track, if not is there some manual way, I will be very willing to learn...more knowledge the more help... here is the recent log for DVD2SVCD that I used to convert yesterday...

I really hope I was specific enough, or didn't write something stupid, remember now this is Basic topics and I am a newbie.

I have a Classic DVD Player which plays VCD's, XVCD's, SVCD's, XSVCD, Supports Subtitles, and Multiple Audio Tracks, plays CVD's but does not supports CVD Subtitles, a 2.4GHZ Intel P4 Processor, an 80 GIG Hardrive, DVDRom, CD Burner, 512MB DDRAM, NVidia Geforce 64MB Video Card, Windows XP Professional.

I hope I was specific enough.

P.S:- someone explain me how the bold, color, quote options work, everytime I click it, a window apperas asking me for the text to be formatted...?

Well I found something interesting on this link

in the XSVCD section it says :-

It is impossible to use multiple audio
streams for multi-language, or to use subtitles.

This is a surprise, because I didn't know that, but I don't know if this is a reliable source or not, could someone confirm this for me...? Yes I am making XSVCD's because in the Bitrate section of DVD2SVCD, I choose 800MBCDr's and 2, 50 Minute CD's each...

Someone explain.

Yes multiple audio and Subs can be made on a SVCD. Your player must support it.

To select the second audio on the conversion tab you should see all the audio selections. There should be a checkbox and a selection marked audio index. Check the checkbox and click on the drop down and select 2. This will give you the second audio tack. If the checkbox is not there the audio type is not supported.

As for your subs try it in your DVD player as I don't think PowerDVD supports SVCD subs. You must have burned the images and not the mpg files.

Thank you very much for the reply, so when I check the other Audio track and make it 2, so when I go in the Audio Tab, for the Audio 1 Priority 1 It will choose the First Track, and for Audio 2 Priority 2 it will choose the second Audio track right, but do you think it will be able to diffrenciate between the 2 English track because it shows that both are english...?



and for the Subtitles, yes I tried a tes and the subtitles showed up and I turned them On/Off and they worked, so I'm pretty sure they work. Could you tell me some manual way to add the subs to the mpeg Streams.

If it does all that why does it not show the Subtitles. This is very frustrating because I can't find any helpful information on this. So could you tell me some manual way to mUx the subtitles. Everything DVD2SVCD did is saved, the sub, IFo, .txt..etc.

I will try the Audio option right now.
Last but not least I went on the link I posted up and it says that Having Multiple Audio Tracks and Subtitles is Impossible in XSVCD's could you tell me if that is true or not. I would really like to know because noone has said anything about it.

Look at the specs for SVCD at www.vcdhelp.com On that you will see the exact philips specs and this guy at that other forum is full of it.

It is definately _not_ true, that you cant use two audio tracks or subtitles with XSVCD.
There are some standards for SVCD and if you go beyond theese standards (for example with the bitrate) you will get a XSVCD, but it has nothing to do with subtitles or two audio tracks.
Moreover there is no need to mux subtitles yourself, dvd2svcd does a good job. If they don´t show up, it´s most likely a player issue.
About audio tracks: if you want two audio tracks, you have to choose two under the conversion-tab, just as markrb described.

I see...I guess it probably is my player then. Thanks for the very helpful information. I will try again with the audio and try the CD on my friends DVD Player and post results, but is there any other way to check IF you have subtitles or the extra Audio track or not...?:confused:

Since i don´t see anything suspicious in your log-file, and i rarely use subtitles, i cant help you. But try searching the subtitles forum of doom9, i´m sure they know more.

I did try searching the forum I really honestly couldn't find something that was relevant to my problem, BUT the conclusion is that my DVD Player probably doesn't support Subtitle support even though I did a test and the subtitles were displayed, but that is no biggie, I will still rip them anyway and test them on my friends DVD player, he has a monster DVD Player as well.

Now I this time made sure that DVD2SVCD would rip the Audio Commentary and now it shows me that the Bitrate would be higher than Standard SVCD Bitrate so I know that I am doing it right,

BTW:- 192 is the Audio Bitrate for the 1st Audio Track, and the Video Bitrate is set on Default, and I have Downsampled Unchecked.

Well after doing another rip, with the appropriate settings, my DVD Player does support Multiple Audio tracks, but still no subs, but I will try it on my friends DVD Player, the only problem that occured was that I lowered the Audio Commentary Bitrate too low, and thus the Audio came out with a weird noise, so I will convert again, overall everything came out perfectly, Video, Audio, Aspect Ratio, everything looks great. Thanks to all the people who replied and gave me help.

DVD2SVCD is a great program, and my thanks go to the creator. Keep up the good work.

I've worked a lot with subs and i think i can help you
You can download subtitle files from http://dvd.box.sk
For you to have selectable subtitles in your SVCD you need to generate the BMP's for both languages. Ok, let's see if i can put this simple:

NOTE: this steps consider that you already have converted your DVD into svcd and have the MPG file on your HD (to do this simple use DVD2SVCD and select no subs nor images). I'm not sure bbMPEG can split MPG files with mutiplexed subtitle streams. If it cant, you will need to split in 2 you original scripts and adjust the times acordingly. Check for a pro with bbMPEG

1. Download the subtitle scripts from the site i gave you. Since you also want the english subs you can extract them from the DVD using SubRip and remember to save the script (see if SubRip can save the script in SubMux format) and the BMP's . You will need them.

2. Since you are generating the BMP's that are not on the DVD, you only need to do this for the spanish subs script.
I strongly recomend you to convert the script to Substation Alpha using SUB2SSA because SSA is a very powerfull sub editor and you can change or add subtitle styles, change position, etc. You can download it at: http://www.eswat.demon.co.uk/substation.html
If your sub scripts are framerate dependent (like those for MicroDVD), when using SUB2SSA, be sure to select the framerate you want the converted subtitles to be. That is, if your script is NTSC and you want the conversion to be in PAL simply select 25 from the drop down.

3. Now, lets move on to Substation Alpha. Open you converted script in SSA. You should add a style to change the subtitles font and size. I use Arial Narrow, bold, at 32 points. Where you define the style, make sure you increase the Vertical Margin or your subs will be displayed at the edge of your screen. I use 65 for PAL. If you are NTSC i think you need to experiment with this value.
Apply the styles you want to your subs and save your work.

4. Now its time for MaestroSBT
Open up your SSA script in Maestro and press the Set Files button. Press Browse next to the output script and in the Save As Type pulldown menu select SubMux (*.sub). Press Save. I recommend to save this file in a directory because the generated BMP's will also be generated here.
Press the Rendering Button. Make sure you select Windows BMP 4 bits (uncompressed!!) in the File Formats group. In the Output resolution select 480x480 or 480x578 depending on your system. Also make sure you DE-select the "Dont clip bitmaps" option. Press OK
Press the Timing button. Select your framerate of your movie in the FPS in and FPS Out dopr down menus. Press OK.
You can then press Edit & Preview button to check the subtitles position on screen and change the Vertical Margin in Substation Alpha if needed (you will have to redo this step ).
If everything is OK press Generate.

5. Final step: sub multiplexing with WinSubMux
Open up WinSubMux and indicate the location of your Input MPEG file (source).
Give a path for the output (multiplexed) MPEG file. Activate Stream #0 and Stream #1 and in each filed specify the location of your SUB files (generated by SubRip - the stream extracted from the DVD; and MaestroSBT - the stream rendered from the script you downloaded).
You can preview the subs in the Preview tab. If everything is fine press Multiplex button.

And thats it You can now split the file or record it to CD using VCD Imager, Nero, etc.

I hope this helps. I did this a couple of times with DivX conversions but now i'm using permanent subs. Its less time consuming See why i evolved to permanent subs Patjen?

could someone maybe explain me what these settings are and how there supposed to work...overall everything has worked out great, my DVD Player supports Multiple Audio tracks and everything seems to be going good, DVD2SVCD is a great program, keep up the good work...:D

Well it's not my DVD Player, something is set wrong with the program, some stream and positioing setting, nothing wrong with the machine, I wouldn't mind if someone elaborated on the proper settings of the subtitles, I also wouldn't mind if someone explained how the Subtitle Extraction works with DVD2SVCD from beginning to end (*all the steps it does for subtitle extraction to muxing*)..:rolleyes:

The procedure I commented to you before, now is no necessary with the last version of AVI2SVCD ver 1.1.3 build 1.:D
Because with this you can add selectable o permanent subtitle without any extra program.
First go to subtitles ->rip.. -> and svcd or cvd it’s depend of your player, In my case I use cvd.
Then go to conversion -> go -> add external subtitles -> and in this place you can select one or two, no problem. I prefer sub extension ( microDVD form).
And after start conversion.

You know the funny thing, my DVD Player seems to play the SVCD Sample Selectable Subtitle file that I downloaded as a test, but when I muxed the subs with WinSubMux manually, I switched around the streams, .e.g. Stream#0 SVCD, Stream#2 CVD...and so on, so when I was swithcing my subtitle streams using the remote to my surprse the subtitles did come up BUT it was the CVD subtitles that I was watching, and I was mad at first but glad because now I knew all the things about my DVD Player, but now I have a new problem, I can't seem to fix the color of my Subtitles, they appear to be green and outlined white.

Now you were saying about the AVI2SVCD program, I actually was using the DVD2SVCD program that also has that function of creatting CVD or Selectable Subtitles or permamnent subtitles but as I mentioned before I thought my DVD Player played SVCD subtitles and I was choosing SVCD Subtitles, that is why they were not showing up and thus I had to resort to your method and ended up with CVD subtitles. I did an experiment, since I was choosing Yellow as the color for the text and black for outline, but the CVD Subtitles kept on coming out Green outlined white so I decided to go opposite and actually choose Green and WHite since the opposite of Yellow is also Green according to my mom, but sadly it came out to green and white yet again. Very annoying...if anyone has a solution or suggestion please post it up...Im using this guide to mux the subtitles.

How Are you using those options :

RESOLUTION:- I made amistake on this I was using the first option but I am suppossed to be using MPEG-2 NTSC, 480x480. I will try with this setting, to see if it might work.

the first it's ok : ntsc 720x 480, nothing to do with svcd resolution. It's a diferent thing.
In Color rendering check 2nd box, two colors for text.

Ok when I use the guide to manually mux the subtitles, I get white outlined green subtitles...and when I created subtitles, using DVD2SVCD they come out completely white no matter what color I choose, but anyway, after doing some more research I found that SVCD or CVD Selectable Subtitle support is not provided by many DVD Players, if it is, sometimes they have bugs, like the color being wrong, like mine is...that is the conclusion I came too after busting my ass...thanks to the few people that actually cared to reply...:rolleyes:

PS:- for those people who are trying to create Selectable Subtitles, don't use the DVD2SVCD Default Positioning, due to the fact the setting is wrong...

It has to be -1/ 465 or 470, preferrably 465.:cool:

That is what I did, (I chose subrip form), but subtitles don't show when I play the burned SVCD on my dvd player. My dvd player play regularly ripped (from dvd) subtitles fine. Is that because I need to choose "microdvd" form? How do I figure out which on to go with? the external subtitle file I have is .srt file.

Ok, I try to be clearer.
When I make svcds I have 2 possibilities:
One: rip from dvd, in this case I don’t need any extra tool than dvd2svcd to rip subtitles. Because normally I come in the dvd.

Two: rip from divx or same rare dvds without Spanish subtitles, for insert external subtitles, I use microdvd format in flw option :
dvd2svcd -> conversion -> Go -> add external subtitle... -> (file type “microDVD”), that was I said before.
