I'm at my wits end and I need your help.

Sorry if this is a slightly OT question. (if anyone can point me to a better place to ask it I would be greatful)

I have an LG GMA-4020B (firmware A107) DVD writer for a couple of months and have burned 45-50 DVD's. Everything from movie backups, file and data backups etc... onto both DVD-R and DVD-RW. Now problems until now.

Now all of a sudden yesterday I am burning a movie to DVD-R in Nero and Nero gives me this error - "overlapped command attempted" and then ends burning.

I have tried looking at Nero's help (?) files - nothing. I have searched the web - nothing.

It seems now that I cannot burn ANYTHING to a DVD (data, movies) with any program.

I also tried burning a DVD movie image using DVDdecrypter as I have done many times - write error. arrrrghhhh !!!!

Funnily enough, it CAN still burn to CD-R/W with seemingly no problems in either NERO or various other CD writing progs. (weird)

This suggest to me the problem is somehow HARDWARE related (even though the hardware has not been touched changed in any way at all) I've checked in device manager and everything appears normal. I've looked at the drivers (all XP native), searched for new ones, but it says everything is up to date.

What could cause this to suddenly happen for no apparrent reason ?

As a last resort, I'm thinking about wiping my whole system clean and starting from scratch (format HDD drives, clean install XP, install devices etc...) in the hope this may "cure" whatever has caused my DVD writer to stop writing DVD's.

Any ideas...?

Can you tell me the exact error dvd decrypter throws up?

You can copy + paste it when its on the screen using the CTRL+C, CTRL+V key combo.

Standard question, what brand media are you using?

Thanks for replying.

I have tried a few different media types / brands.

Most (90%) of my burning to date has been with DVD-R from TDK and IMATION.

Also use IMATION DVD-RW for backing up my data etc.

Also got a MAXELL DVD-R and DVD-RW and DVD-RAM (not used this one) included with the burner.

Also I have used some el-cheapo brandless ones

The problem I described seems to be the same no matter which media I chose (I tried each of the four DVD-R brands I had available yesterday and also the DVD-RW from IMATION and MAXELL. They all gave the same error).

I also remembered that when burning in NERO, the "overlapped" error can occur at the beginning (after caching, quick format, lead in etc), or sometime it will get partway thru the burning and then "error".

It's got me baffled...?

What other drives have you got installed in your PC, what chipset motherboard have you got, is it overclocked, do you have any other DVD burning apps installed, have you attempted to upgrade the firmware, are the discs dust free before burning?

*What other drives have you got installed in your PC,
LITE-ON 40x burner, 2 x HDD

*what chipset motherboard have you got,
ASUS AV7333, Win XP Pro (SP1), RADEON 8500

*is it overclocked,

Not overclocked. standard settings (Athlon XP +1700)

*do you have any other DVD burning apps installed,
Only NERO and DVDDecrypter (both latest versions)

*have you attempted to upgrade the firmware,
LG GMA-4020B DVD-burner is using firmware A107 which is the latest for this drive.

*are the discs dust free before burning? Disc are fresh out of wrapper and completely clean.

The wierd part is I burnt 3 DVD's on Saturday morning no problems, and had two more to go. the fourth one was when the problem first occured. No amount of re-booting, running Norton, de-fragging, disc doctor, etc seems to make any difference.

From your experiences does anyone ahve a gut-feel if this is hardware or software related problem.

Thanks to everyone for thier time in helping me with this so far.

One last question from me, what type of power supply have you got?

Just trying to go through a process of elimination. Hopefully LIGHTNING UK! will be able to shead some light on the actual cause.

I'm at work now so I can't see the exact type, but the case itself is an A-Open full tower (part number is 80Q or something like that). Fairly sure its a 300W or maybe 350 PS. It was in there when I bought it new from the shop.

I have an analytical type mind and normally I can work my way thru most problems in a thorough, step-by-step process to find the cause of a problem and then determin how best to overcome it. If I reach a point where I don't know something, then I look it up, learn what I need, and continue on. But this mystery DVD writer that all of a sudden stops writing, is giving me a real headache. Its frsutrating me that I can't work it out.

Thanks again everyone....

Hmm its hard for me to comment here because Ive never done any proper testing on a DVDRAM drive. They work in a really weird way compared to the other types of writer.
The error my program gives out it somewhat strange and I never know why it happens...it just does!

Without doing some proper bus sniffing, I cant help you.

Not to worry. Thanks anyway to everyone who answered.

I think I'll backup my data etc, wipe the whole thing clean and start fresh.

Up to now it's been two months of wedded bliss between me and my DVD-writer. They do say that the "magic" goes out of a relationship after a couple of months together. Maybe it's just being "tempremental" because I stayed out the whole night last Tuesday without sending and email to say I wouldn't be home...... Does anyone know how to tell the gender of
DVD-writer because lately mine seems to have a mind like a.....

Cheers Tim....
