serious problem with my sound

this has only occured recently and i havent changed any drivers or hardware. i'm using winxp pro SP1, with all critical updates. amd800 384 sdram.

the problem is the sound in my vcd's crackles whenever there's loud sound. the movies i downlad from the internet are avi, divx4 usualy. i encode them to mpeg with tmpeg. when i play back the avi's, the sound is good and there are no problems. then the mpeg files created have the cracking problem. although the sound doesnt play at all in zoom player, it crackles in media player. when i rip them as vcd's , the dvd player plays it and the sound crackles much more, and the speakers are good so it's not their fault. it sounds as if they're about to blow.

it's not the pc speakers becase they're good and winamp plays well. some sounds in windows don't play well. eg, in msn when someone logs on i get the usual sound, followed by a few crackles.

it makes the movies unwatchable. anyone got any ideas?

very sorry i didn't realise music video's are illegal to download.

you might want to check any equalizer settings... expecially the ones in your movie player... perhaps somethings wrong there!

k sorry bout the illegal coment, but i honestly didn't know and when i say movie i mean any avi file.

@killingspree, you were right on one account. it turns out zoom playe didnt play the sound becuase the volume was turned down, i didin't even know it had such a function. as for equalizer, there isn't one in my dvd player and i don't htink zoom player has one.
