Let me clarify the freeware license. DVDToolbox wanted to protect his product and not have it get ripped off and bundle with another commercial product. His 0.11.1b version was freeware and it encouraged donations. His next version 0.12.0 had a few restrictions if you didn't register. This latest version removes all restrictions and makes it 100% freeware. If you don't register it for $12.99 (no biggie cuz it's freeware but it will help encourage further development) the only thing is it'll have a two 5 second register screens and that's it. No other difference...it won't expire in thirty days or whatever.

I know this is a strange license but he felt this was the best way. I still like thinking of registering as donation but whatever.

I continue to find additional failures with DVDxcopy v1.41 The program just fails with many discs. For example, with the movie U571 DVDxcopy attempts to create a single 5 GB file on disc 2. 321 studios released a version 1.50 but people on the net are having many issues with this new version.

I found a program to replace DVDxcopy. It is called DVD toolbox. The program can split movies onto 2 discs if required like DVDxcopy does. It does not put a stupid notice at the beginning like the 321 studios message, and does not put in the FBI warning like DVDxcopy does.

Another advantage to DVD toolbox is that you can uninstall DVD xcopy and remove the additional ASPI layer it adds. The gear drivers. After uninstall the ASPI layer is still left on your machine, even though DVDxcopy states the gear drivers have been removed. You can delete the files manually and reboot. In C:\windows\system32 you will find a file gearsec* (not sure of the exact name), and in c:\windows\system32\drivers you will see a gear drivers or two there. After you remove these files and reboot XP will state it is removing upper or lower filter drivers. There are the gear drivers that attach themselves to the DVD reader and writer drives. The gear drivers can sometimes confuse Nero.

DVD toolbox does not load any ASPI drivers since it does not decrypt files on the DVD. You use DVD decrypter to do that. DVD decrypter is uses the native XP ASPI layer (as DVD xcopy should have done).

The program can be used as freeware. I registered to support the programmer so the program would continue to improve. The cost to register is $12.95, so it is cheap. I think we should support these programmers in their efforts to provide us with good software for our DVD backups.

How to use:

Start DVD decrypter in file mode
Select all files of the movie (CTRL-A)
Decrypt

Start DVD toolbox
Make a destination directory
Select the source and destination directories
Select execute
Remove the foreign languages, and directors comments audio tracks you do not want
Remove subtitles you do not want
Note: always leave English subtitles even on English language movies. Needed if there is a bit of foreign talk in an English movie. This is common.
Select to split to 2 discs if required
Click strip split

The program will make directories for 2 discs in the destination directory
For example,

E:\output
E:\output\disc1\video_ts
E:\output\disc2\video_ts

I still don't think too many people are aware of DVDToolbox. The only time I ever heard of it was March 17th on doom9.org news section. They claim to have sold 150,000+ copies of dvdxcopy at $99 a pop. I believe it too cuz all my friends they've only heard of or seen advertisements of dvdxcopy. They have the bucks and marketing. Hopefully we can save a few chums a couple of bucks if they're aware of the alternatives.

Suppose we want to combine the two discs later as new media allows full movies greater than 4.37 GB in size. Will it be possible to do?

Also, would it be advisable to not add the graphic "Please Insert Disc 2" which might complicate the recombining process?

I guess start streams (by right clicking on it) allows you to set which default audio you want to start. Kinda cool.

From now on DVDToolBox threads should be placed in the IfoEdit forum. I know the program is of interest to users of all the other programs here (as is DVDDecrypter) but we need to designate a place to discuss its development.

A post to announce a new version of this or any other program is OK, but don't be surprised if the announcement gets locked to encourage any discussion to move to the correct forum.
