Conversion from avi

I apologise if this isn't the right media for this type of question but I need help.

I am tasked with the job of creating an image file (.jpg, .bmp whatever) from an avi file that was mistakenly created on a digital camera by accident.

So I need to know how to convert an avi frame to a .jpg file.

easiest way would be a normal screenshot...
another way is to load the file into virtualdub(mod) and go save image sequence as... this will save every single frame as a bmp, png or something else i do not remeber...
