DVD backup coming to a end?

Will dvd backup come to a end? I hear some people say there will always be a way but I'm not so sure of this. they make billions from these movies and they are trying to keep the average american worker from backing up movies for his own use. I think this is completely wrong in the first place AND dvd's are far from indestructible. I don't see them offering any disc replacement plans for damaged discs. most people that do copy dvd's probly wouldn't have bought them in the first place. i know that doesn't make it right but its still the truth. if the world wasn't so programmed and could think for themselves we could do a boycott everytime they pull something like this. Slowly they are chipping away at our rights in the digital age. if you give up freedom for security you get neither. there may come a day I won't give another penny to hollywood. I heard the same crap about video games. they cost so much because to many people copying them. well dvd's were still expensive when they couldnt be copied. even now its hardly worth the trouble to backup a dvd because you either take a hit in quality or loose some features.
it seems the people with money make the laws and we have no say so.

Hmmm, maybe they have finally worked out how to stop us from backing up our DVD's. I have been trying to backup 'Road to Perdition', using DVD2SVCD's internal rippers...no joy there, so I tried Smart Ripper and DVD Decrypter, and all have stopped dead about midway through Vob 4. :eek:

I just thought the DVD may be faulty but after reading the above am not so sure about that now. :(

But will keep trying tho.

if you look properlly you will see that that story is from february 2002 so is kind of on the old side. funny, dvds are still being backed up a plenty as far as i can see. :)

Thanks dragongodz, Yeah I guess if there was a new protection about everybody would be screeming by now.
I forgot to mention, the DVD is a DVD9, cant say I've noticed that one before.

I have been trying several different methods and get stuck at 44% on vob 4 too. anybody else did this successfully?
PS this is a brand new disc, I just took it out of the package and slipped it in with no dust, touching or scratching. Seems odd that someone else got the same problem at the same point on the same movie? Whats up with that

Hello dvd_maniac,yeah this seems strange as I know some who have ripped RTP without a hitch. What did you use to read the dvd?
I used a Pioneer DVD-120 reader.

As Lightning_UK says, always try in another DVD Drive and it should decrypt fine. If that doesnt work you could try authenticating the drive, manually copying the files to your HD and decrypting from there ??

I finally got road to perdition to rip fine in my pioneer a05. I usually do not rip or read with this drive as I am trying to prolong it's life. But I have three other dvd-roms in three different machines that could not rip this. Same error at same point.
I eventually read it in the a05 and it went through up until that point fine at around 7x, at the point it failed on the other drives the poineer a05 dropped to 1x-1.5x ripping speed. Ugh, but oh well it worked. Oh yah, It did not work until after I used the speed hack firmware...
So I guess dvd backup is going to be OK....

Glad you got it to work ok. The fact it would only ripp using your Burner, suggests to me there is some sort of protection on the RTP DVD that only the Burner can get through.
Like, most readers and some CD Burners cant read the Sub Channel Data on most PSX cd's or the Safedisk 2 protection for PC games.

Anyway, as I dont have a DVD Burner, looks like it's back to the drawing board for me.
