Something with large buttons and text that's legible from a normal viewing distance. And something that has keyboard commands for most commands to use with a remote control. It would be nice if the gui buttons scaled no matter what res was used instead of optimized for say 640x480.

I've designed Zoom Player for just that. There are specific large-button skins and all the navigator interfaces are set for large fonts (with adjustable sizes). And everything is designed to be remote controlled (I use it for that function myself).

Zoom player is what I normally use for playing files. Couldn't find where you can adjust the gui button/text size. Also I always wanted zoomplayer to have the ability to refresh a directory and add it to the playlist on launch. I normally dump all my new video in one directory, so if zoom was pointing to that, it would just add everything there to the playlist on launch. Also with the playlist, I couldn't figure out an option to have it disappear on fullscreen playback, is there an option for that?

When using fullscreen, you need to use the Navigator Interfaces. Just hook the Media Navigator into your directory structure and use that (you can configure the navigator fonts to anything you'd like).
If you want bigger buttons, you'll need a different skin. The default skin was designed for desktop and not TV. But there are several big-buttoned skins like Glass & Steel and a few others.
You can have ZP auto-load a specified directory using the "/add" parameter.
