Out of curiousity, is it legal for me to rip a rented DVD to my hard drive to watch provided I delete it later?

Rights vary from country to country; and international copyright law may also apply. Please review Doom9's disclaimer page (http://www.doom9.org/disclaimer.htm). A general interpretation in answer to your very general question can be found in the first paragraph under the Piracy and Copyright section. If you need specific information, I suggest you seek professional legal advice in your country.

As jggimi accurately pointed out, it depends on the country you live in.

Now, let's forget legality for a second and talk common sense. If you really don't have time to watch the movie before bringing it back to the rent shop, and you make a hard drive image out of it AND of course you delete it right after you saw it, I doubt you could ever get into problems.

Plus, you would be pretty unlucky if a legal officer just popped up in your house asking where you got the movie from, just during the few hours you will keep the movie on your hard disk...:D

Common sense... I think ;)

I must admit I sometimes do this, since I can't help renting movies without even knowing if I will be able to watch them in time (Wife may have other plans for the evening (he he), or sometimes it's the baby who has other "yelling" plans for the evening :D )

Have a good movie !
