extracting pictures from picture galleries?

No its not some kind of heist ;)

I was wondering is there a way of taking the pcitures off a DVD which have got the pictures in a "picture gallery".

Because some of them are great and would make good backgrounds etc.

Rip the DVD in file mode. Usually the picture galleries are located where all the other menu's are, in the VTS_0x_0.VOB from the series of vobs that contains your movie. So if the movie vobs are VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, etc.. then the vob you want is VTS_01_0.VOB.

Rip this vob to your hard drive and load it in VirtualDubMod. Go through and find the series of frames you want and set your start and end points. If you want to resize the pictures, for (S)VCD authoring for example, then set video tab to full processing and set your resize filter to 704x480/576. Now just hit file/save image sequence and give it a name and location to save to. It will create a bmp file for each frame, which in most cases means one bmp for each picture. Sometimes each picture will display twice, essentially two frames. You'll either have to delete each extra frame in Vdub first, or delete the extra bmp after saving.

Alternatively, you can use TMPGenc. Process the vob through dvd2avi to make a d2v file. Load it in TMPGenc and go to source range. Set yoru start and end points and if you need to resize than set this as well on the video tab. Now click file/output to file and select sequence BMP/PPM... Again set a filename and location and it will output a BMP for each frame.

Wouldn't it be easier to just make screenshots with your favorite DVD software player? Only problem is that these player often resize the pitcure.
You can use the player + Hypersnap which preserves the original size (720*480). Unfortunately Hypersnap is not for free :(

slogra - i was trying to avoid the screenshot method, because i want the true image.

Everytime I've ever captured an image from a dvd, either through hypersnap or through the software dvd player's function, it always came out looking much different than from the actual extracted frame. The color was always off and the quality was worse. Also if you have anymore than maybe 5 frames to capture than this actually takes much longer than my method. You have to do each frame separately and if you are reauthoring to SVCD or VCD than you have to resize to a compliant resolution. The method I listed sounds long but you can literally do it all in about 2 mins.

This is exactly what I have been looking for. I want to extract a couple of the photos from the Vanilla Sky DVD for printing with a profesional printer. I am a complete newbie, never ripped DVD before. I have a pioneer 104. Can you tell me what software I need to do the above advice. Thanks :D
