best way to rip season dvds?

i´m currently ripping the ds9 (deep space 9 nine) season 1 dvd´s

i´m very frustrated. IC7 always produces 4.8 gig images, which is OVERSIZED.

also , the quality of the produced season dvd´s is not that good looking (53-55% original size)

the 4 episodes / dvd are packed into 7 big VOBS which makes it even more complicated to rip them via dvd2dvd-r and packing them back together with ifoedit.


has someone ever done such a project before and can help me with this?
i´m thinking about ripping the whole thing as divx, coz thats what i done DOZEN of times and i can do that while sleeping ;)

edit: there are no extras on some (only the menue which i WANT to be kept)

also the video source is 4:3 PAL

is there maybe any way to process the episodes as a whole stream and then compress them using cce and repacking them into the vobs?

I wish I had a £1 for every posting on this site which you could have searched to get the info but to save you time I suggest that you look at using ifoupdate in adjusted cell mode with CCE and DVDMaestro - as with everything else there is loads of advice if you can be bothered to look.

dr: 1€ for every posting that someone doesnt understand.. 4 episodes are packed not into single VOBS but into continuing vobs with one IFO but you can (for example in dvd2svcd) select the single episodes and rip them.

i am only asking if someone knows a way that is less time-consuming than ripping the whole dvd, demuxing everything, encoding everything, remuxing everything, placing the epsidoes in maestro, and then of course combining the menu in such a way, that the episodes play when you use the menu

nevertheless, im gonna find out if i could rip everything using do cce 4 u and then remux everything into continuing-vobs in a way that the episodes play correctly


misterx: i got the recent update, when using movie size analyzed 100% i nearly everytime get the desired size, but in this single case i always end up with 4.8 gb.. even if i set desired size to 3.8 gb and analyzed video 10%

Are you able to give dvd2one version 1.1.1 a go? If nothing else its output size is usually spot on.

today i tried dvd95copy and got VERY satisfying results.

(after running IC7 7.02 (latest update) with a complete size of 2.8 gb and still output VOBS are 4.6 gb im going to throw that one away for ds9)

although it is the demo version and i cant say anything now about the final size of the full dvd, it produced me a 10 minute stream, which had 200 mb and just looked great. where i had very ugly macroblocks in ic7 that were even visible on tv, in dvd95copy i only had a little more blurryness.

i do not remember who was the one who compared the 3 programs, but i think dvd95copy´s way handles old noised input material much better than ic7

I can say the full version of DVD95Copy is much better than the demo, especially regarding speed :)

the opinion of which is better for quality of certain video material is probably more personal :)

but just one question tho,

did you search for hidden MB's?

If IC does not see the true size of a DVD to begin with, it affects the way it works :)

BUT another problem: when i try to playback the burned dvd-r with windvd it just crashes..

do i need to update the vts sectors with ifoedit?

depends what you've done with DVD duing processing and any mods done

is this the DVD95Copy you are having trouble with and is it crashing straight away?

check to see what it's looking for when playing back and whether or not it's still there

problem revised:

dvd95copy doesn´t crash at all,
i encode all material except some subtitles and audios

windvd seems to play the dvd correctly
after rebooting it worked.. nearly

the dvd shows at first a blue menu with all languages to choose from.. BUT the encoded version from dvd95copy shows me a black screen, although the clickable language buttons are still clickable.. but not visible... so when i click somewhere on the screen, the dvd plays normally.. which bug could that be?

if that problem would be solved, i´m going to buy it ;)
as the author works really hard and every few days updates his proggy, i think its only a matter of time till this bug is gone

I got the opposite effect. I did the whole first season of ds9 with ic7.02 and it works and looks great. But, I had it calculated for 4.26 and they all came out just under 4.00GB. One other thing I came across...When I didn't have menus at 100% it would sometimes freeze during navigation(Although I am not sure if it's more of a media compatibility thing).

reripped dvd, redone all stages: no effect still 4.8 gb

dvd1 came out 4.35..

MediaMage i am very interested to know how this could be done with cce as trying all the packages ie dvd2one and dvd95copy i am not 100% satisfied.

how do u get the eps and extras back into a single set of vobs?

to achieve this you need to completely re-author the dvd...

my current solution until a tool comes up that can do that is:

1. rip the whole dvd in file mode using dvd-decryptor
2. using ifoedit, remove all unneccessary audio-tracks and subtitles
3. process using dvd2one .. quality is not that good but the best solution ATM which can be done in a reasonable amount of time. in 2 month when the 2nd season comes out probably a new program has evolved

until then, i have bought a new 120 gig HDD and stored the images on it for further processing when such a program appears
