Capturing SECAM on an NTSC computer system

Hello all!

I will have SECAM VHS to capture to my computer to send them in DVDs...

Now, I will have the samsung video converter to set the output to NTSC that's not the problem..

But.. You know when we do rip of DVDs, we can put the movie in FILM format.

I would like to do the same with the VHS I will capture. I know that the best is to slow down 1 frame per second instead of adding 4.97 frames per seconds..

How can I do that? Can I if I have a NTSC capture card ? I use Virtual Dub to capture...

Tell me what do you suggest me.

...But.. You know when we do rip of DVDs, we can put the movie in FILM format....This process is called Inverse Telecine, or IVTC. Telecining is the process of taking images from 24fps 35mm film and transferring them to 29.97fps NTSC video.

If your source -- in this case, 25fps SECAM -- was originally 24fps film, then it will depend on how it was converted to 25fps. Please click on www.doom9.org/ivtc-tut.htm and review Hakko's section on PAL transfers labelled "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly."

The link is a tutorial on Inverse Telecine procedures, and the entire contents and additional links will be help explaining to you what may be on your tape. As to encoding on DVD; you may want to leave the content in interlaced 25fps (PAL, effectively) or take the 29.97 "conversion" to NTSC as delivered by your player. It would depend on the intended audience for your DVD transfers, and, of course, on the percieved quality of the tape player's output in the different formats.

gimi is right,don't touch the framerate:
leave it on 25fps...
if you remove 1 frame each second,that's no good
(as film was speeded up for conversion....you'll end up with
jerky video in motion scenes)
also why use "pull-up"?no need for that either...
ntsc dvd player is capable of doing it on the fly i think
(it obviously plays filmsource dvd's ok....perhaps some kind
of multistandard dvd player is needed...)
proper pull-up won't result in jerky video..

quality will take big hit if you do this....
does your card support secam input?
most bt8x8 cards do......
if you can,capture secam directly,and then
do with it what you want....
(probably the best thing would be to make PAL
25fps dvd from it...)

I will run to the tutorials on IVTC right now..

I must convert the VHS 25 fps to a NTSC capture and my ATI All-in-wonder Radeon only support NTSC I guess. I don't have the chip bt8x8 on it.

I will do some tests and see what I can do with that card about fps, and come back here with other questions if I need :D !
