I've tried to do the method in the guide stripping vob-ids: I've saved the vob-id 7 that was the smallest sigle.

mmm... and now?
I have to let this 30mb file alive or to remux it with the other blank.m2v file?
But... something is telling me that it's not a good way what i did...
ps: with previous test (Ghost (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=49434) ) I had no prob. When I click on a "stripped part" the PowerDVD menu plays 1 sec and than It returns to the previous status.
With JAWS 2 I can see a black screen on "stripped" titles BUT it doesn't takes 1 sec and back to previous: here I need to go back to movie with the remote.

yes and no
I would remux the original VOB's with the blank first then remove VOB ID's after and finally inserting a dummy program cell
use guide 5 first and use the original VOB's and remux the blank .m2v file into it which will shrink it in size considerably
then if you have a fussy player use guide 7, remove all the VOB ID's apart from 7 and insert dummies then you will be left with a small VOB file of under 1MB
if you feel lucky you can remove just the VOB ID's tho inserting the dummies may be a better option, it's upto you
that's the way I would do it to get a small blank VOB file but still maintain a working structure
sounds confusing but get's easy once you've done it a few times and there's actually a few methods to use and my guides don't cover every individual example so you have to mix n match them. I need guides for my guides :D
hope this helps and just ask if you get stuck again cos it is confusing sometimes :confused:

I can't understand how, starting from a multi pgc ifo, I can have a "empty/blank" (and fully working) .vob file of my unwanted extras :(

what methods have you tried and what exactly are you trying to do?
don't give up cos it's simple when you understand how so that's why I'll try and help you
basically all you need to do is strip all the VOB ID's apart from one
then REMUX the blank .m2V file. I'm not sure you can replace the VOB
then stick in the dummy cells in each PGC that will all point to the VOB ID you kept which will be number 1

I can't do here like my first example in this reply because I need a VTS_03_0.VOB little vob that doesn't exist here.
In this case what I have to do in order to have, like in the previous example, a simple empty vob that doesent affect the usability of the menu (no crash or no long blank periods @ stripped extras)???
I've tried to remove all vob-ids except one, but... then?
Gotta a file, obiously small, but that contains something I don't want (trailer or something other...).
How can I give a kick to it? ;)
Now I'm too confused... I've tried several times your awesome guides but, since I'm a newbie here, I've lost myself into the maze of the .ifo's structure.
I've stripped/encoded 1 dvd with no problems: fully working menu with only 1 second blank screen for each stripped extra.
I've stripped/encoded another dvd that -dunno why- contains long time black screen into the stripped extras: I've to use the remote to return to the main menu while with the previous dvd it's all automatic (no extra found = back to menu).
Another question: is better to edit the .ifo/.vob file BEFORE using ic7 or AFTER it?
btw, first of all sorry for my "desperate" english :) and, more important, a BIIIIIIIIIIG thx for all your help!!! :D :D :D

you have done the right things with the multi pgc with NO layer break between cells and no cell "to be used" and stripped all but VOB ID 7 but now you replace that new smaller VOB over the original VOB and use Ifoupdate. there are a few ways to do it and this is one
strip 7 of the 8 VOB ID's leaving just one, use IFOUpdate and manually insert the program/cell entries into the other 8 PGC's all pointing to VOB ID 1. Guide 7 shows you how to do all this
then use Guide 5 to replace the VOB with the small one from the guide and fix the IFO
then finally open the IFO and Get VTS sectors to fix it all

I want both of these titles gone. I tried procedure #7 at here (http://www.deano.dsl.pipex.com/backup/prepare.htm), but I got a little hung up with the reference to IFOUpdate...I've been using IFOEdit for everything and haven't used this tool yet.
Anyway, I was messing around with IFOEdit v0.95 and stumbled onto something. Here's what I did:

I went into VTS_PGC_2 under the VTS_PGCITI table for VTS_02_0.IFO (title set that these titles are in)
I scrolled down to the bottom where the section "Cell Position in VOB:" begins.
I changed "Cell_1: has VOB ID" from 2 to 1, and saved the IFO file.
Then I applied MackemX procedure #5, replacing the VOB(s) with the blank VOB, and Re-Mux'd the VOB.

PGC_1 is the movie, of course.
PGC_2 is the splash segment.
PGC_s 3 and 4 are trailers.
PGC_s 5-8 are a bunch of weighty FBI/Warning segments.
I did a test, stripping PGC_5. Before I got to the IFOUpdate part, I checked the files with InstantCopy and DVD Shrink; both would read them. PGC_5 looked like this at this point:

Can't stay in this state though, right? Maybe cause navigation problems? Then, I did that IFOUpdate thing and I got this whacked IFO; I dumped it to a text file and it was like a 100K larger than the backup!! Wouldn't read in DVD Shrink, either.
Anyways, I tried something different...this time going after PGC_s 5-8, doing something kind of like in my previous message above. I started fresh and went into the VTS_PGCITI table and changed all of them to have the "Cell_1: has VOB ID" to VOB-ID 1 (splash segment). I also changed in the individual VTS_PGC_s the "Playback time" to 82.
THEN, I used the IFOEdit VOB Extras and stripped out the VOB-IDs that were being used by PGC_s 5-8 (VOB-IDs 6-9). The resultant files loaded up without fault in DVD Shrink and InstantCopy. The VOB Extras function reset the Playback times to that of PGC_2 (VOB-ID 1), but I figure I can go into the indivual PGC_ structures and set those to 82, as in the procedure.
What do you guys think?

I would also like an answer to this question. I followed guide #7 and the ifo was screwed up. The dvd chapters were messed up in the menu, and the audio was missing on some tracks only AFTER i had used ifoupdate, it worked fine before using ifoupdate.

This is where we check to see that all VTS_02_001.VOB is correct as above. It should be the same. Skipping the next two VOBs, VTS_02_004.VOB is showing VOB ID: 1 and CELL ID: 1. Since 004.VOB represents our PGC_3, it should be 13 and 1. So to change the ID values, double click on line and input the required number and press OK to set. VOBedit is kind of confusing here so I let you know. Pressing OK not only sets, it saves. VOBedit does not automatically refresh the screen to display changes but if you click on 000000, under LBA column again, it will now.

Wouldn't it have been simpler, in that example, to just do VOB Extras in IFOEdit and strip VOB-IDs 1-5, 13-18, then fix up the corresponding titles' chapter counts for PGC_1 and PGC_3 in VIDEO_TS.IFO and be done with it (i.e., use MackemX Procedure #2).
Your VOB-IDs would have been renumbered, but IFOEdit would have accounted for that with changes to the IFOs. Yes?

My discovery here, in trying MackemX Procedure #7 "Removing ALL VOB ID's from the Movie/Extras PGC of a Multiple PGC IFO and create a dummy entry (this stops List index out of bounds (X) error)", was that I think I found an easier way. I don't don't know if it introduces a little bit of slop into the technique, but it seems to be working for me.
The thing that was new for me in the above code example that I gave, was the absence of a second VOB-ID of sub-second length in each program chain. That is the classic case for which we employ MackemX Procedure #2 "Removing PART of the Movie/Extras VOB ID's but not all of them".
I couldn't strip the VOB-IDs that were associated with say, PGC_s 5-8, without ending up with orphan program chains (i.e. no chapters, 0 programs, 0 cells). This was also the problem that the original poster of this thread was trying to solve.
My solution was to first point the PGC_s to an existing VOB-ID that I was going to keep, and then execute VOB Extras in IFOEdit and strip the unwanted VOB-IDs. This works, in memory, with IFOEdit -- meaning I don't have to write the IFO files back after making the mods; I can modify the currently opened IFO file, then immediately execute the VOB Extras function.
The side effect, is that the PGC_s inherit the characteristics of the VOB-ID that they were pointed to.
If I point PGC_s 5-8 to VOB-ID 1 (used by PGC_2) in the above code, and strip PGC_s 5-8's original VOB-IDs of 6-9, then the new IFO files that are written have PGC_s 5-8 looking like PGC_2.
At this point, if I bring this content into DVD Shrink, the titles associated with PGC-s 5-8 all look (and play) like the title associated with PGC_2 (which was the DVD's opening splash sequence).
Now, I can't have that.
So, I somewhat follow the second part of MackemX Procedure #7 and edit those PGC_s' play times down to decimal 82 and knock their start/end sectors down to 0. I don't bother to change the streams, though.
The funny thing is, that when I now bring this into DVD Shrink, the titles associated with PGC_s 5-8 are no longer listed (they still are in InstantCopy, though).
I think the end result is pretty much identical to that of MackemX Procedure #7. But it's easier this way, with no IFOUpdate step.
You simply find an existing VOB-ID to point your target titles to, then strip their original VOB-IDs. Then fix them back up after VOB Extras is done.
Now, getting back to your example. Yes, I think that approach might work here, and it might be cleaner also, since you're creating blank VOB-ID content for your stripped titles (versus borrowing against another VOB-ID and 82'ing it's play time).
But my way is quicker (and dirtier)?? :)

ummmm...I guess I used a bad example. I just so happen to have the Simpsons Season 3 Multi-PGC episodes on my harddrive so I used that. Yes, you are correct only because, in all my PGCs, the last chapter was a 15ms blank clip. Again, a bad example. So stripping, out the previous VOB-IDs will fix that.
Anyways, stripping certain VOB-IDs in my example does not affect my DVD structure.
Now, getting back to your example. Yes, I think that approach might work here, and it might be cleaner also, since you're creating blank VOB-ID content for your stripped titles (versus borrowing against another VOB-ID and 82'ing it's play time).

Yes, the example used in the guide is rather poorly suited. On first read, I got the same impression as yours but on subsequent readings I got the magic the guide intended for and its just simply fabulous :D. In fact your example would be the perfect candidate for applying this :cool: :cool: guide. Give it a go, guarantee a new high. :p
Btw, hows that IFOEdit code extraction EXE going. Ready for prime time? ;)

LOL, I've got my IFOEdit thinking cap back on again after a few months holiday and I'm busy playing with something and it looks like I'm able to remove individual cells without even stripping in a matter of a few seconds work by changing a few values
so basically just modding the IFO does it, no need for VOB Extras and both IC and DVDShrink recognise the files they way I want and with the correct sizes, no questions asked!
I'll post info & pics after thoroughly testing but at the minute everything seems ok :D
I can't believe how easy this is if it is going to work! and maybe you guys can help me if I cannot work out exactly what to do if it doesn't

Guess it has to fit ones style for adoption. I read other guides before and never warmed to it. Some seems just either has too many hard-to-relate steps or relies on trickery above an average understanding of the tool or the DVD structure. I learn to appreciate a technique that is straight forward in concept and procedure.

Well, I do something different. Point PGC_2 to V/C 1/1. Then, Invoke MackemX Procedure #5 "Removing ALL VOB ID's from a Movie/Extras single PGC".
That is, I redirect the program chains to VOB-ID 1, then copy the blank VOB into the source directory, then invoke VOB extras, stripping all streams, and keeping just VOB-ID 1 -- all in memory. Result is this:

Although, I wonder if it would have been sufficient to not change "Number of Programs", "Number of Cells" in Stage 5 and simply change the Cell_1 VOB-ID to point to VOB-ID 1, and strip VOB-IDs 2,3 from there. Hmmm... that's got me thinking. Anyway, the result was this:

Yes, the example used in the guide is rather poorly suited. On first read, I got the same impression as yours but on subsequent readings I got the magic the guide intended for and its just simply fabulous . In fact your example would be the perfect candidate for applying this guide. Give it a go, guarantee a new high.
Btw, hows that IFOEdit code extraction EXE going. Ready for prime time?
I have no doubt, that I am going to need to use 2Cool's approach at some point, but for cases like these, I gotta go the speed route! :)
And, yes! I am like a week behind on that IFOEdit macro -- getting beat up in managing compute time vs. nag time. Two major opposing forces! :p

Yes, automation is needed. I am seriously considering going back to hacksaw-marker method. I.e, delete VTS_0x.1+.VOBs entirely and write in marker on disc..."Do not click on Special Features!!!" :D

Well, I do something different. Point PGC_2 to V/C 1/1. Then, Invoke MackemX Procedure #5 "Removing ALL VOB ID's from a Movie/Extras single PGC".
That is, I redirect the program chains to VOB-ID 1, then copy the blank VOB into the source directory, then invoke VOB extras, stripping all streams, and keeping just VOB-ID 1 -- all in memory. Result is this:

I wanted to try it on a larger scale like my Simpsons Season 3. Yours had a 2 PGCs with single cells. Yes, it will work but you and will have to expect that another DVD might have more PGC cells so my DVD had…

Since the custom blank VOB i'll be using had a V/C Id: 1 / 1, I changed ALL my cells as my PGC_1 first cell. This had a V/C Id: 1 / 1.
I did what you mention. Without closing IFOedit 0.95, I swapped out my original VTS_02_1.VOB to VTS_02_7.VOB with a blank VTS_02_1.VOB. I stripped all streams through VOBExtras.
Results:
10 KB VTS_02_1.VOB in…10 KB VTS_02_1.VOB out.
Now, looking at my PGCs. Original number of cells still intact but now show time of 00:00:00.15 each. Now, my original IFO had layer breaks and those were also kept in my new IFOs. Now going back to the 15 ms cells…since each cell now has 15 ms of blank clip playing, it would be a tad slower than having a single one playing.
As for speed is concern, in my guide (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=60542) , it called for a custom multi blank cell VOB. Say, I already had a 7 blank cell VOB already available, which I did. Note: I went and made a 10 VOBs each with a certain amount of blank cells with all showing V/C ids. Anyway, all I have to do is change the 7 V/C Ids in my custom VOB according to each my original PGC starting V/C Ids in VOBEdit and then swap out my original VTS_02_1.VOB to VTS_02_7.VOBs with my new one. Then, it’s just a matter of stripping and correcting.
So the advice is to have a folder with prepared VOBs with different amounts of blank cells. Then all you need is to change the V/C ids.

this is the quick version of my method
I change 7 figures in the IFO, in fact just copy them and click Save which takes seconds, load it into IC8 and it works :D
DVDShrink require another 2 figures to be changed elsewhere to recognise the IFO and still needs further testing
back soon with a mini guide but basically all I am doing is changing the IFO to trick IC8/DVDShrink into only seeing what I want them to see even though the VOB's are untouched
so you can see the time saved as you do not have to process the VOB's using VOB extras and copying 7

This might be the reason why I changed the Program/Cell counts in my second example down to 1/1, from 20 / 21, before stripping.

Yeah, I've thought about this. But Program/Cell reduction (if necessary) + V/C redirection + BLANK VOB still seems faster?
I guess I'm trying to understand why it seems important to keep these V/C pointers intact. They're only relative to their own title set, right?

all you do is delete playback of the cell, then goto the relevant VTS_PGC_1 in the VTS_PGCITI table and change the Cell_1: entry point sector to the number shown in Cell_1: start sector of the last VOBU making sure you are changing the same cell as you have just deleted playback for
when you are finished click SAVE,the VOB's are untouched :) and it's all done in a matter of seconds once you understand what to do
DVDShrink also recognises what I want but it's sees the 'hidden' stuff as unreferenced
it would be good if you had the option to disable it recognising the unreferenced stuff, as in this example the menu VOB has 115MB of unreferenced material in the original

I thik you may have read the wrong post but anyway don't they both give the same results?
one strips then remuxes and one remuxes then strips ;)
that was just to help leopardone with his problem and I can't even remember what my guide says but there are a few ways to basically get a 12kb blank file
this is another method for a single PGC which seems to be one of the fastest and easiest
replace the VOB's with the blank 12kb VOB
open the IFO
delete playback of the cells apart from the 0.xx sec cell
click VOB extras
tell it where to save
click OK
click Strip it
takes longer to say it than it does to do it :)
there's so many ways for so many IFO's to get what you want, it's so confusing :confused: . This method has nothing to do with the above anyway problem. I'm talking rubbish so just ignore me :)

yeah a little, that was just one of the top of my head but that had a 0.xx sec entry already in the PGC so it makes it simple as you can see by the length of the guide
there are so many scenarios to remove stuff and I just wish I could tick a box and it did it all for me cos although it takes minutes to do it manually I want to do it in seconds cos I'm lazy :p

Hey, that's MackemX Procedure #5 adapted for title sets with more than 1 VOB-ID!
The only thing I do different is strip VOB-IDs which adds about 5 secs to the procedure. Maybe not necessary though, eh?

To fix this I then remux the VOB with a blank.m2v file...

Well, I was thinking on another theory for a version 2 of Partially blanking out Titleset PGCs. It's not a quick but effective. Say, there's a MultiPGC that hasn't got a 15ms VOB. I'll join a blank VOB at the end of the last Title VOB and it'll have, say, a V/C of 99/1. Replace the new VOB with the old VOB. Correct each unwanted with a number of Programs/Cells of 1/1 and also it's associated VOB_ID: and CELL_ID: at the bottom of the same page to 99/1. Then all I need to to do is strip and correct. Might work.;)

if you use IC8 as your weapon of choiice, your IFOEdit executions seem to be less to elimate the crap you don't want :D
there's no need for the extra time consuming bits :p
so many shortcuts can be used, it's great and most involve just changing a few figures in the VTS_PGCITI to 'hide' what you don't want :sly:
whereas previously IC7, you needed to do extra :eek:
these methods are dirty but they work so I'm happy and a big thumbs up to Pinnacle ;)
If a GUI IFO editing tool could be made where it gave you the option to change figures in a PGC_x entry in the VTS_PGCITI, by use of copy/paste or basic hands on editing would be a great tool to have. I have visions of what it could do but ain't gotta clue how to make it :confused:
are there any people out there who can read data from an IFO, edit it and write it back to an IFO? :cool:
that was my reason for calling on IFOEdit 0.96 :(
