Not sure this belongs in advanced, please move if not.

I have been running DVD2SVCD for a long time but recently I have had a very slow encode and I did some fault finding. I found I had some service running in the background called GMT - this called another service called LocalService, it was hogging about 5-20% of the CPU and it was thrashing the disk (probably due to contention for disk). I killed the service and my encoding is back to normal.

Does anyone know what causes GMT or what it is? I just keep killing it now but I'd like to undertsnad where it came from.

That's one of Bill Gates surprises you can switch off.
Win XP every month wants to synchronize your system clock from an internet server WITHOUT asking you!

But it uses so much CPU and runs continuously, surely there is more to it!! I'll give it a try - how do you switch it off?

As an aside, I found a similar service runing on my work laptop and killing it certainly fixed a lot of my performance problems - and there I was blaming IBM for their crappy hard drives.
