View Full Version : Resolution Vs. Bitrate

I have another doubt about my DVB-S digital recordings and their conversion with GKnot into Divx.

I may choose to capture from these two channels:

1) 544x576 - Video is VBR from 4 up to 5 Mbit/sec..

2) 720x576 anamorphic - Video is CBR 3.997 Mbit/sec.

What do you prefer ?

The latter has better resolution and gives me larger pictures, almost without need to resize, but 3.997 / (720x576x25) is 0.404 bit/pixel.

The first gives up to (5 / (544x576x25)) = 0.669 bit/pixel, but after resizing the resulting picture is smaller and needs to be zoomed out when played on my TV-set.

Bye !
(I know this question is a little OT in this forum, but here I found very skilled people about pixels and resolutions ;)

Well considering Gknot reccomend staying above .2, .4 is really good IMO and I would go for that because in the future when HDTV is standard or something you already have the filsize in s nice high resolution.

I might be wrong though, so Gknot gods let us hear what you say

I'm ignorant on DVB, so my opinion might be completely wrong.

what kind of resolution is 544x... what is it good for?

my 2cents: you can preserve the anamorphic image in divx5 or RV9, and apply the proper aspect ratio later during playback. I'm a huge fan of this encoding method, provided that the material is high quality and noise-free, and of course, the bitrate is enough for the purpose. However, I never tried to play such video on a TV set. No idea whether it's possible and how you make it work.

magomago:

I'm afraid that here in Europe we won't never see HDTV, but I prefer the higher resolution too.

ohliuv:

544x576 is one of the most used resolutions in DVB-S, at least according to what my Nokia 9600 reports...

I use the Kiss player for playback, but it doesn't recognize the anamorphic format in Divx sources. I should set manually the TV set to "Widescreen".
Anyway, I'll do some tests following your suggestion.

Thanks to both of you.
Bye!
