XviD to Divx 5.0.3 pro...

I was wondering... I have an archos jukebox multimedia. It needs movie's to be encoded in a max of 352x288 and can only play divx 5.0.X. I have a bunch of movies that were encoded in 2 pass XviD which I want to encode for the jukebox. But now here's the problem... all the movies are bigger than 352x288. That means I need to reencode them.
Now what I am wondering if there is any point in doing 2 pass or even multipass with the XviD files. Say I have a 2 pass XviD that was encoded at around 1000kbit and is at a resoulition of 640 x 344. I need to reencode it to divx and resize it to 352x192. I was wondering if it would be any use encoding the video by 2 pass at around the same bitrate in divx or should 1 pass at the same bitrate be enough? Any help?

Try a CompTest with DivX5Enc or GKnot (using the XviD as the source, of course). Encode it like any other movie, only your source isn't a DVD this time. A simpler route would be a 1-pass encode, seeing as the movie will be at such a low resolution, many details will be lost anyways.

Till now I just used virtualdub and did a regular 2 pass with divx 5.0.3. It's about vcd quality... the jukebox can play on the tv, so I get about vcd quality in most movies.

What I wanted to know was that if it really mattered if I did 1 pass or 2 pass cause 2 pass take twice as much time of course ;).

2-pass always makes a difference. Whether it is noticable or not is the question. When you get constrained for bitrate 2-pass IMO is always a good idea. It allows the codec to even out quality accrost the clip so some sceens don't look absolutely perfect while others are unwatchable. Instead pretty much everything has the same quality all over.

You can even go for multipass. More than 4 is pretty much useless, but doing multipass fine-tunes the quantizers.
