Since I somehow got stuck working with DVD2SVCD and due to a friend of mine suddenly owning a DVD burner I started ripping Buffy episodes without menus and extras to DVD-R both with DVD2One and IC. Since german c't magazine tested both tools and concluded that IC did a better job of preserving image quality I decided to let IC do the final job of downsizing.
So here's what I did; I've been using:
DVDDecrypter to rip a complete Buffy DVD to my HD
DVD2ONE to strip 3 eps
VOBEdit to join those 3 eps
Ifoedit to rewrite ifos (cut & paste subtitle colors, set new chapters = 1 chapter per ep, set default audio and subtitle streams, get vts_sectors)
which results in a DVD with 3 eps of roughly 5 GB.
Now on my successful rips I used DVD2ONE to downsize the DVD to 4.3 GB; every time I pressed 'skip' on my standalone's remote I could jump to the next ep as planned. Now when I did that last step (downsizing) with IC and burned it to DVD-R suddenly the chapter points where different! The second chapter did not start with the second ep but with the last few minutes of the first ep, and another skip did not jump to ep 3 but made the DVD stop (both on my standalone and with PowerDVD 4.0 on my puter's DVD-ROM).
Now when I CRC-checked the original ifo from before donwsizing and the ifo from the DVD-R done with IC they were different! Is this normal? I always thought IC would retain the original structure simply recoding the data stream, so I expected the ifos to be the same since the chapter points are the same. Or have they moved since the video quality is lower and the vobs are smaller in size therefore the chapter points begin elsewhere in the file?
Another thing that strikes me as odd is that when opening the newly created DVD for downsizing in DVD2ONE I get 45 chapters although I set it to 3 with ifoedit. The downsized DVD however shows 3 chapters only?!
To sum it up: I'm not sure what messed up my chapters, either IC or myself by setting default audio streams/subtitles. And how can I verify this when PowerDVD plays the movie as intended my standalone however doesn't...
