Hey all,

I want to know what is the difference between the DVD writers today,
If I buy a cheap one do I loose quality? or will have problems burning some dvds? or the only thing I loose is speed?

Also, is there any problem today to backup DVD movies? (authencation problems / DVD media size?) its like there are movies today that are bigger than 4.7 GB and won't fit into one media?

Help will be appriciated !

Thanks.

I don't mean to be rude here, but questions like "if it is cheaper, is it worse" are pretty vague and difficult to answer.
Most people I know own either a Pioneer A104 (or 105) or a Sony DRU500a (I do). These are pretty good devices, still you will find people having problems with them from time to time (frmware revisions, bad devices from factory, etc).

COncerning your second question, use the search button and have a look at the guides and you'll find every piece of information you need regarding DVD 9 (above 4.35GB). There are backup guides here for every single type of DVD you might encounter on the market...

Good luck

Well,
Its not about the price, I just wanted to understand if there are differences between the devices,
I remember when I bought my CD writer when it was the most new there were lots of troubles at the begining, some CDROMS couldn't read the cds and stuff like that,

The question is if I purchase the Sony DRU500a and I backup my original DVDS, normal DVD players will read them fine or I'll start having problems...?

Also, the only guide I could find is the guide about how to duplicate DVDS or splitting 9GB dvd to two medias,

But as long as I have a normal one sized original DVD media it always less than 4.7G?

Thanks.

Not every stand alone DVD player is compatible with DVD-R. The newer the player the better your chances of it working. Also some players work better with different media. Your best bet would be to get a Sony DRU500a and buy a few different brands of media and test them on your player. Worst case scenerio, go out and buy a cheap Apex DVD player. They seem to work fairly well with DVD-R and you can get one for $50 and up.

If you are using a DVD-5 (single layered disc) and you rip it with DVDDecryptor or SmartRipper you should be able to burn it to a DVD-R without issue. Search the forum and you will find answers to almost any question you could have.
