I made this DVD that has menus, a movie, etc. For the background music I converted from a CD and a got a wav file. Then I converted this wav file to ac3 in SoftEncode. This music will play out of all 5 speakers in the 5.1 setup I have. However, the movie(which is a wedding) audio only plays out of the front speakers. Why is that? I encoded the wav file of the movie just like the background audio wav file. Do I need to make 6 separate channels of the wedding audio in Softencode if so, why didnt I have to do that for the background audio file?
Any help we be appreciated.

make sure you have selected 2/0 for both encodes (in the authoring software, it should tell you how many channels in the ac3 file).
your 5.1 system is probably setup to do a DPL style pseudo surround playback on 2.0 sources, but if you incorrectly encode it, it wont spread the sound around.

If I want it to come out of all the speakers, then I should encode
with 3/2 right? not 2/0
I have been coding with 3/2 setting and it still only comes out of the front L and R speakers. Its a bose system by the way, which may have something to do with it.
I just dont understand. I can take a wav file from a cd or converted from a mp3 and bring it into Softencode and it shows up as channel 0 and channel 1. I encode that with 3/2 setting with LFE enabled and the ac3 plays out of all speakers, but I do the same with audio taken from video (like the wedding or a basketball game) and it will only play out of the front 2 speakers.
Please someone educate my dumb ass
Thanks

im not too sure how soft encode works, but unless its upsampling the the 2ch to 3/2 then you should only get sound from L and R.
by encoding to 2/0, you can have the stereo to do Pro Logic (Dolby Surround) style decoding to mix it around the room.
