Stripping with VOB Extras

Hi guys,
just a question to understand better what IfoEdait is able to do and what its limitations are. According to the guides and personal experience, it is as easy as two clicks-and-go to strip out things as warnings and logos with IfoEdit. However, I've noticed that, depending on the DVD, doing so leads to a final project that doesn't work anymore. Yesterday I dropped the very initial logo of a backup I was doing and right after that I saved the project and played it with the DVD player of IfoEdit, which right at the beginning complained about navigation problems. In a second step I decided to keep that logo and strip off other stuff following the same steps, and then everything wotrked fine. So why is it sometimes this works and sometimes it renders and unusable project? What is IfoEdit doing exactly when it strips things out? And at the same level... is there any way (other than trial and error I mean) to get to know what can be stripped out and what should be left?

I've never had a problem with IFOEdit stripping out the movie properly. I only ever keep the movie so I just DVDDecrypt the main move and the video_ts.ifo, etc files. Basically I keep the first 3 or 4 files that are shown on every DVD and the main movie. Then I run IFOedit to strip the streams, menus, warnings, etc. Works perfectly everytime.

Just to let you know, I see your POSTS from time to time and think I have answered some of them. I see your questions and see you struggling with some of the problems of backing up a DVD. Your above post shows me your frustration, and I too used to share your pain. The problem that I think you have is very basic, as MPUcoder educated me some time ago, "A DVD is a PROGRAM", this one line educated me beyond believe. I then hunted down information on DVD structure, Nav info, Packet info, Register programming, etc... I then SAW THE LIGHT. You see, your having trouble with rips and looking for a SINGLE solution on why certain back-ups work, and some dont. The DVD is a program that is loaded into a DVD Player COMPUTER, so hacking the DVD code (Program) on one DVD is NEVER the same as another. There is NO one IFOedit solution for each DVD. If you spend some time learning about the structure on the DVD, then all these questions in this forum will make sense, and you will also be a god at ripping them. I hope I can assist you on your journey, and I wish you well. Soon, you will understand it all.

I'm not looking for a single solution for everything. I do understand different DVDs have different structure and that this implies solutions are not unique.
If I post my questions is just because I haven't found yet a guide where all this is explained (I'm not complaining about this, nobady HAS to write THE GUIDE for me). I can only say that I try to learn by doing since I do not have the required background... And yes, I'm learning. People like 2COOL has been of *great* help to me. What else can I say? My intention is not to annoy anybody...

I know there are alot of questions to be answered when you first start this hobby. I was the same way. It's frustating when there's no guide or post on a fix. I invested alot of my time trying to figuring out most of my grey areas. Stuff like from DVD structures to navigiations and hex values. I think you are on par with your learning as you catch on quicker than most newbies.

I wanted to respond to your post but I needed to know how your Menu Language Unit was laid out. If you stripped out your logo and every VOB-Id after that, your navigation commands, unchanged, is still looking for that clip. Also, when stripping, you will encounter VOB-id shifts. Like if you stripped out VOB-Ids 3 out of 4, then your VOB-ID 4 will be renamed as 3. There's a VTS removal using IfoEdit Guide in WWW.doom9.org showing you about this. And there was another guide, which I believe was taken out, that show you how to manually change the VOB-Ids to working order.

Like VidHack mentions, at first, it's not easy to understand commands and how to edit them correctly but in time, you will see the light.

Well yes, that's my hope... as I said I try to learn by doing since I do not know a good resource where all this commands and navigation staff are explained. So that is my new question: could somebody tell me of a good site or book where I can find all this explained in some detail? As you said, it would be better to learn the basics first so that I can get an idea of the whole picture. And as I said before, guides here do not help (at least do not help me) 'cause they tell you how to do this and that but do not explain why this thing goes like this or like this or like that...

I don't know if this will help you, but:

IFOEdit's DVD player is just IFOEdit's implementation of DVD player. If it does not play your project it just means that it does not want to play it and nothing more.

I've seen it several times already, that after IFOEdit's modifications to the DVD it refuses to play project, but when I use other software DVD players everything is fine. If I go ahead and burn the project it works perfectly well on my standalone.

Of course it does not mean that you may do anything to the DVD structure and then complain that IFOEdit does not play it or expect that it will work on your standalone, no. Just sometimes IFOEdit does not play even "almost" right structures.
