I am new to adding subtitles I've used DVD2SVCD many times but never used subs, I have a AVI movie on 2 cds with the SRT files split into 2 files aswell, also I would like the subs to appear in the border at the bottom of the screen. Normally I would just join the 2 avi's together & encode but I haven't a clue how to add these SRT files into the encoding. So please could someone explain how or post me a link to a guide or something. THANKS.

Did you find a solution to your problem? I want to add SRT subtitels to an avi and convert it to DVD.

Yes I'm sure I did find a solution somewhere on these forums but it was 2 years ago so can't really remember now. sorry.

Subtitle workshop does the trick.
http://www.urusoft.net/download.php?lang=1&id=sw

Go to Tools-->Join Subtitles...-->press add and load the subtitles to join--> select the output format "srt" and the output framerate, Check recalculate time values then press join! Give the new srt file a name you like.
Good Luck

This seems to be the kind of tool I need. I will try it this week. Thanks for the link.

I am converting an avi file to SVCD with English and Spanish subtitles.
I followed the guide at http://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=220351
I am confused as to what to do with the ripped subtitles, specifically where in do they go on the CD.
I succesfully converted the .avi file to SVCD and ripped the subtitles inside AVI2SVCD v1.2.2 build3.
I previewed the video (still picture) before converting and the subtitles are seen in the video.
After conversion is finished (without errors in the log) I have 2 x CD_Image_File_CDx.cue files, a subfolder named Subs containing 2 x en-n1-x.sub , txt, xml files and 1,000s of bmp files and 2 x files named bbMPEG_Muxed_File-subbed0x.mpg

I have mounted the .cue files using DaemonTools and watched the SVCD using Media Player Classic 6.4.8.4. I also watched the bbMPEG_Muxed_File-subbed0x.mpg file in MPC but neither file shows susbtitles. I searched the sticky FAQ and this forum but no joy. Nowhere that I can find is it explained how to handle subtitles after they are ripped.

What gives ?

I am not sure that MPC supports selectable subs on SVCD.
If you plan to watch in MPC you may have to encode with Permanent subs.

@Nick: MPC supports svcd subtitles, I think there even was a news item in 2004(?). I just tried with an ancient i-authored svcd of mine & it works fine.

@seehowyouare: I don't quite understand where you rip the subtitles from - aren't they from an external text file? Avi subtitles which are to be handled by avi2svcd must be in a text format, no need to rip them, but rather convert them to a series of bitmaps (that's the directory with subtitle bmps you are seeing) and a timed script for proper multiplexing.
Also, that description is for making a dvd - I assume you modified it accordingly.

If your svcd was properly multiplexed with svcd subtitles (the inclusion of "subbed" in the filename would suggest that, but better check the log file), there is nothing else you have to do. Just burn it on a cd-rw (or mount it as you did) & find a player which supports svcd subs - either a standalone or a software player.
In MPC, go to play->filters->mpeg splitter, it should show you the list of subtitles present in your mpeg stream. I don't know any other software players which are capable of svcd playback.

Steve

I have a somewhat related problem. I'm trying to create an SVCD with permanent subs (since selectable ones aren't too compatible according to videohelp) and my current script looks like this:

[Filtering]--->[Resize]--->[Filtering]--->TextSub("X:\wherever\subtitle.srt")

But the subs become too big when viewing the final encode in my computer, and in the TV the result is worse. Is there any way to solve this issue?

@ Chainmax
Are you using DVD2SVCD to create your SVCD or another software?
Since this is a DVD2SVCD thread, if you're not using the same software, please start a new thread.
Tell us what you're using, post any scripts or logfiles (cut and paste into the post, please rather than attach files) and we'll see what we can do.

I'll start a new thread then, I apologize for the inconvenience.
