View Full Version : Last minute or two of movie cut off after upgrade to 112b1

MovieLover
23rd March 2003, 13:27
I just upgraded from 109 to 112b1 and now the second disc of each movie is being cut about a minute short. It's consistent, so I know I didn't just make a frame selection error. The disc is fine size-wise, so it's not an overburn problem. (I see the problem with Daemon before burning anyway.) I've double-checked the things that some people have had problems with (currency separators are set for U.S. comma and decimal, TMPGEnc is set for 2-pass VBR, MinAvg box is not checked). Here's a log:

Check the ripped VOB's and see if they are cut short as well.

This way we can start to narrow down where it happens.

Not only are the ripped files fine, the MPV file in the video directory has the ending like it should.

Other info that may be of interest from the Bitrate tab:

0 - 55 mins 1 CD 796
55 - 60 mins 1 CD 796
60 - 80 mins 2 CDs 796
80 - 126 mins 2 CDs 796

The bbmpeg_muxed.mpg files are cut short then?

If this is the case then we know it's happening in the BBmpeg part and can work from there.

Hmmm... I don't have those files. I'm guessing that I'd have to check the "Don't delete any files" box? I can tell you that the bbMPEG Movie Settings 2.ini file has muxStopTime=999999 which implies to me that it should get all of the .mpv.

markrb
23rd March 2003, 21:48
Use recover and check don't delete files after you have loaded the d2s file. Just recover from muxing and cutting. If we can narrow down the area of the problem further it would greatly help.

Good call! I did that, and sure enough; the bbMPEG_Muxed_File01.mpg file is truncated. I notice that it's 795MB (834,357,832 bytes), meaning the missing minute and a half or so would take it over the 796MB limit I set on the Framerate tab. Don't know if that's a clue or not... I sure appreciate your help!

Try recover again and before you start it up from muxing and cutting change the cd size on the bitrate tab to 800.

The cut point right now is set at 791 and if the cd size was set at 800 then that should read 795.

See if that helps.

I'm afraid that setting the CD size to 800 (I did it on all 6 lines of the bitrate tab just to be sure) didn't make a difference. Oddly enough, the cut point was still 791MB as you can see from this snippet:

I think you are going to have to manually edit the d2s file and change any line that says 791 to 795.
Sometimes changes in the CD tab after a certain place do not get passed along.
It's a simple text file. You can edit it in notepad.

Just to be sure, I decided to start from scratch with all bitrate settings at 800, rather than recover. The bbMPEG_Muxed_File01.mpg file is about 10 seconds closer to being complete, but it is still about a minute short of the end frame I selected. It is 838,671,176 bytes or 799MB. The Encoded_Video_TMPGEnc_NTSC_FS1.mpv file is cut at the right spot, leaving the bbMPEG step as the suspect.

But I noticed something else: the encoded video file is 1,549,877,248 and the encoded audio is 180,102,048. Adding those together and dividing twice by 1024, then dividing by 2 (for 2 discs), I come up with 824MB discs. If my math is correct, could the problem be in the calculated bitrate sent to TMPenc?

At the risk of cluttering up this thread, I'm attaching the log from the new run done at 800 just in case it will help in diagnosis. I sure appreciate all the time you're spending on this. (You'll note from the log that I started the run last night, forgetting that I had frame selection checked so it patiently did nothing all night long waiting for me...)

If the MPV file has the entire video I can't see how it could be a TMPG problem.

If you play the mp2 and mpv files do they show the same length?

I really have only one more suggestion to try.

edit the d2s file and change the number of cd's from 2 to 3. Then use recover. See if it creates a 3rd disc with the missing video.

This is starting to get beyond what I know how to do. I hope others can pick it up from here.

Yeah, the encoded files are the same playing length. The reason I asked about TMPGEnc was because I figured that if the wrong bitrate was sent, even though the right frames were selected and the resulting encoded file had the right number of frames, the output file would be too large and thus would be cut prematurely by bbMPEG. Changing the d2s file to show 3 discs and running the mux/cut again did indeed produce a 3rd disc with the missing couple of minutes. That seems to me to be an indication that that was the problem; TMPGEnc running at too high a bitrate. But you're the expert, I'm just guessing.

Sounds like if you can increase the disc size enough you will get the missing minutes. This would be for this encode only as I would think in the long term it would be better to fix it. The easiest way would be to have you switch to CCE as it's much more accurate.
It could also be frame selection is causing a problem.

You could also force a lower bitrate by figuring out what DVD2SVCD thinks it's going to use and then putting a lower number in the Max Avg box on the bitrate tab.

If you want a possible quick and dirty fix to this one take that third disc in MB's and divide it in two. If that third disc is less then 20 we should be OK. Edit the d2s file and add 1/2 the size to the 795. So if the 3rd disc was 20 MB's make that 795, 805. Then use recover from muxing and cutting. This will make the discs bigger, but they should be OK even if you have to overburn.

Thanks, that's a great tip for this one, but I've had this problem with three different DVDs so far before bothering you here on the forum. Clearly it's a pervasive problem -- but why me if no one else is having trouble??? I'd love to use CCE if I could afford it. <sigh>

Do you happen to have Min AVG checked on the bitrate tab?

This is a common problem with TMPG, especially if you use CQ mode.

Nope, I was a good boy and scanned the forum before posting. That's one of the things I saw and checked before bothering you folks. The Min. avg box isn't checked and I'm using 2-pass VBR at High quality. Things worked great with 109, but broke when I upgraded to 112b1. I just tried backing up to 111, and it got even screwier! The second disk came out over 900MB and VCDXBuild choked on it.

FYI, I just tried 112b1 again, this time without frame selection but unchecking the last chapter of the disk to cut the credits. I seem to have gotten a complete second disk - including the chapter I deslected so it would be cut!?!
