firstly can I mention that if IC just dissapears on you it's probably because you have got the error reporting turned off in XP, so when it's crashing it's not displaying the error
IC disappeared on me and I wondered why I didn't get the error message for all of about 1 second :), till I realised I had the option turned off
this was when I tried to back up the known problem DVD that no-one has backed up and that's Simpsons Season 2 Disc 4 region 1
that was until now :D
cos it didn't take me long to crack the error tho :D
I will be uploading the usual info very soon
so expect the usual 2-3 pages crap :D
hopefully Pinnacle will sort these 4 bug's out sharpish!, but until then I will as usual have to give IC a helping hand :(, if I decide to use it that is

finished the rubbish
aint the full version cos that wudda took ages :D
but read as much as you feel necessary and take the info away with you
Simpsons problem disc and how I did it HERE (http://www.deano.dsl.pipex.com/temp/sims.htm)
this will not be the answer for every DVD but the bit about auto resizing is strongly recommended so IC can pick up the full DVD everytime
also watch out for unselected audio/subs as that also happens
any questions about other problems DVD's just ask :D

I also noticed they fixed the audio mapping issue at least :D as I removed tracks 2 & 3 and it still had 4 streams at the end of it :)
so maybe if we shout loud enough maybe they will fix these few blips too aswell as the sizing issue

Thank you MisterX! I have been trying everything to backup that disc, and now it looks like we may have a solution. I will be giving it a shot shortly...

that'll do me. At least one satisfied customer :D
did you try it before and it bombed?
which way did you do it?
did you remove VOB ID 5? or just make sure IC knew the full size of the DVD?
has anyone else tried it on the other 'problem' DVD's?
CzechMate

Yes, very satisfied! :D
I tried it many different ways, from suggestions in the forum (only using IC - I'm still not quite good enough to use other "manual" methods on mutli episode disks). It did crash in exactly the same place as your's though.
I basically followed Page 3 from your link from start to finish.
I havent tried that method on any other disks, only because I havent had any failures.

so you didnt strip the blank scene!
hmmmmm, I thought it would still work as I removed it anyway, but mine still works but I got an extra few MB's towards the rest of the DVD in its place :)
I'm still not sure if this would work on 2001 & Spartacus as IC will still try to encode them due to it being part of the main movie and removing the VOB ID's for the blanks may not be an option
so the sooner IC get the 'Black Hole' BUG sorted the better :D
that's 3 bugs I've named
the 'Butchering', the 'Phantom' and now the 'Black Hole' bug :p
p.s. I suggest you check the size on EVERY DVD and I will be explaining why in a new post

Thanks!!!
A little late for me to try it tonight. But I'll give it a try tomorrow!

no problem sorting it for you but it does go to show if you try hard enough you can get past most of IC's bugs
strip out the blank bit aswell cos it gives you some extra MB but still works OK tho I haven't fully watched the DVD so the risk is yours but I can't see any strange side effects (yet!:))

man, thank you misterX! i was pulling my hair out trying to figure out what was wrong. i will let you know whether this works. i have never heard of ifoedit... i will try it out.

I tried it, and I can get the full size of the DVD. However, when I try to uncheck some of the larger titles to get the total under the limit, IC won't let me do it.
All the title checkboxes are checked, but they are greyed out, and cannot be modified. I can only check/uncheck the main movie box toggling between the 6.77gb or whatever or 0 kb.
Is there some setting I have to change in order to allow myself to check/uncheck individual titles?
Thanks!

success! i have a 4.3 GB ISO and it works. thanks misterX.
to jl-seagull, just do the what misterX EXACTLY step by step on page 3. it will work. i set the menus and special stuff to 50% of the size and the 4 main videos to 57% to get it just under 4.3GB.

jl-seagull

Nope. Haven't messed with the reg settings at all. Do I need to in order to be able to select those individual titles?

yes you do, the easiest way it to just use the Instantcopy Settings editor

I have created a DVD that has a dark scene and analyzes the DVD ok but then crashes immediately when processing the DVD informing me of the vobtrans.ax error cos of dark scene
and also another that crashes during analyzing informing me of the vobsrc.ax error
I've now posted on the pinnacle board I have such DVD's they can download (both less than 100MB) as they say they cannot help with copyrighted material and cannot seem to recreate these errors (feeble excuse in my eyes . )
but this is homemade so it's not copyrighted so they can use it
offer to pinnacle (http://webboard.pinnaclesys.com/read_messages.asp?WebboardID=1&ForumID=877&SectionID=170&ThreadID=135823&ThreadStart=0&Pos=1&cntThread=121&lng=1)
the vobsrc.ax seems to be because it's missing a menu VOB or menu info from an IFO due to lack of menu VOB's, so that's why IC is bombing out as soon as it tries to naalysis cos it's missing the info
now this will also be the same for any other file that is supposedly there in the IFO's yet not there, if you know whta I mean
but if I create a DVD the same blank scenes with a tiny valid VIDEO_TS.VOB of just an image it passes the analysis stage (no vobsrc.ax error) but then bombs on the processing of the blank scenes :(
:D DVD95copy works just fine with it and compresses 2nd title just fine, menu or no menus cos it just displays title 0 as 0MB cos it don't exist :D
took 5 minutes to compress title 2 (126MB) set to 30% :(
resulting size for title 2 was still 126MB, so does this mean it can't be compressed anymore cos basically all this DVD is a black screen created from one black image and recreated in 90000 frames
DVD95copy recreated an 8kb menu VOB for title 2  and now it says unknown format in PowerDVD
is that why IC bombs cos it tries to compress an uncompressable image or cannot compress it to what it's been set to within reason?

pinnacle reminds me of my days in tech support....take any little way out you can and get the customer off the phone....typically, support people don't want to do any work....i know from experience.

we know why it crashes, it's very dark scenes or something along those lines
it just getting them to admit it crashes and say they are trying to fix it
instead they are just replying saying 'it's copyrighted' either because they won't touch copyrighted stuff to simulate the problem or they just can't fix it yet
so that's why I created a DVD and offered them a copy cos its not copyrighted
still no take up of the offer :(
