IfoEdit Death Hang

Sorry if the title is too macabre...lol.

First off, let me say that this is NOT an IfoEdit problem. It's a TIGHT :devil: loop that was caused by my trying to go to the main menu by changing the first play PGC pre-command to jump to VM menu, or to jump to chapter 1.....

Split the flick 'Below'. When trying to 'DVD Play' Disc1, IfoEdit totally hangs up...i.e. blank windows, with processing in the background. CTL, ALT DEL doesn't work even. Have to power down the computer. Running XP.

Original ripped files play just dandy.

Tried to jump to Title Menu, but same thing happens.

Copied menu VOB (VTS_01_0.VOB) from original disk to disk 1 with no help. Copied VTS_01_0.IFO/BUP from original disk to disk 1 with no help either.......

Copied all VTS files refered to when doing the DVD Play from the original disk to disc 1, did VTS Sectors, etc......same deal.

Anybody done this flick, or want to give it a go.

It's a British flick, and I've heard they are doing some tricky stuff..............

Since the only difference between disc 1 and the original disc is the last part of VTS_01, must be something there, I guess, but can't figure why IfoEdit would hang like it does, instead of just getting a navigation error.....................z

Just noticed that it has a lot of different Parental Masks/Levels for different VTS's. This caused problems in another flick as I recall. Any way to turn all those off??........z

Also, the 'Death Hang' only happens (so far in my investigation anyway) when you change the first PGC to go to the Video Manager Menu............z

I was going to reply earlier if you had done any edits. I have experienced that alot especially when I like to dive into the navigations using IFOedit. What causes your "Death Hang" is that by sometimes doing even one edit, you may have place the navigations into a loop and you can't get out of it unless you ctrl-alt-delete or by resetting your whole computer. Your system resources will get low very quickly. It's very hard to fully understand how the navigations work on any DVD but always backup your IFOs and BUPs prior to editing in the case you don't want to go through that again.

The problem (death hang) happens whenever you edit the First Play PGC to do a jump to the Video Manager Menu, OR if you try to jump to Title 1.

The second disk plays fine when you change it to Jump directly to Title 1.

The titles played (DVD Play) on the original, (i.e. the source folder) are

1 (VTS_01)
2 (VTS_01)
3 (VTS_02)
4 (VTS_03)
13 (VTS_05)

The titles played (DVD Play) on Disc 1 (after the split) are

1 (VTS_01)
2 (VTS_01)
3 (VTS_02)
4 (VTS_03)

and then it just 'stops'

i.e. trying to play disc 1 after doing the split and VTS Sectors, results in a 'stopped' hang when it tries to go to Title 13 (VTS_05)

I noticed that when I played Disc2 (with a changed First Play PGC to jump to Title 1), it ALSO plays Title 13 (VTS_05), in addition to VTS_01, but there it finds it.

Pretty weird.

So, it hangs (stopped hang...not the death hang) on disc 1 when it tries to play Title 13.

Don't you have room on your Disk 1 to put VTS_05 files on it?

2 Cool. I DO have the VTS_05 files on it. It doesn't get a NE (Navigation error), it just 'stops'. It's got something to do with having 2 or more titles in VTS_01, I guess. Derrow addressed that on his site, but more and more movies are doing the same thing. The usual fix, i.e. Jumping to the VM menu causes the 'death hang'. Jumping to Chapter 1 of the movie causes the death hang also.

But disk 2 plays fine (with VTS_05 on it as well, which it plays, but I don't know why it would play VTS_05, since the movie is on VTS_01, and I jump directly to Title 1 on disk 2, and it starts playing the second part of the movie just dandy). There must be something on the second part of the split VTS_01 that it needs to read????

Wish I knew more about how the programming/program flow of videos works....:confused:....

If there were some kind of trace function in IfoEdit, where it logs what it does when playing, that would help. I see that it 'calls' parts of the navigation program???...z

How about playing the original DVD IFOedit and when you get your movie playing, press your "Exit" button in your DVD Play panel to see what titles have played. See if these titles exist on your disk 1.

2 Cool. I did that (see posts above this). It plays all the titles on disc1 except Title 13 (VTS_05). VTS_05 is on disc 1, and VTS sectors has been done. It just stops when it tries to play that one I (status=Stopped).

Btw, the file sizes on VTS_05 are TINY, i.e. VTS_05_0.IFO=16KB, VTS_05_0.VOB=8KB, VTS_05_1.VOB=16KB......

Disc 1 seems to play in WinDVD...will check further......z

Here's what to do:

Change the LAST Pre Command (#17) to:

JumpSS_VTSM (Jump to titleset menu)
Title Nr. 1, Title Set Nr. 1, Menu: root

This takes you straight to the menu, and skips Titles 2, 3, and 4, although, it STILL plays Title 13 (VTS_05), and I don't know WHY!!! :rolleyes:

Zardiw, I changed the last precommand on Shrek to
JumpSS_VTSM (Jump to titleset menu)
Title Nr. 1, Title Set Nr. 1, Menu: root
and the menu comes up ok, but when you choose play on the menu it stops then. But your method does work on almost all movies. I always do the last precommand too.

I think it depends on where the menu is located, i.e. Video Manager, or Titleset. I suppose you've already tried going to the Video Manager.....I'm going to play with Shrek, Alabama and Kate and Leopold when I get a chance....I want to try some 'tuffies'.....lol......Hans

Cool! I wouldn't mind someone else taking a look at them, there has to be a solution! I can't remember if I tried videomanager with Shrek, will have to check. How can you tell where the menu is located?

If you watch the status/title window after you hit DVDPlay, it shows what it's playing there. It flashes through it pretty quick at the beginning..........z

On Shrek, instead of hitting Play, go to Scene Selection and pick Chapter 1. I had to do that on Knockaround Guys, but I didn't know then what I know now. Maybe some of the later techniques would work with that...anyway that should work........z

Yeah, that's what I've been doing. Hopefully one day I'll get to the level where I know the insides very well of the dvd to see why it hangs. Thanks!

Could this have something to do with it? I've had Detect Mastering Errors off by default, maybe it needs to be left on?

Josh. Try it with the option on.......let me know. I've got a feeling it will slow it down some, but don't really know..........z

I think that fixes the burned movies that freeze during playback if I understand it right. I think to be safe I'm going to always leave it on.

I just ripped Lilo and Stich, and it looks like it took an extra 7 minutes to rip to the hard drive with the Detect Mastering Errors checked. Not a big sacrifice.
