Cant Enable DMA

Hi Guys ... got a slight problem now. I am using a Via Motherboard So & updated the VIAHyperion Drives (3in1 thing they have AGP, IDE & somethinge else).

Anyways Now i cant seem to enable DMA on my LiteOn LTD166S. Its a Slave on the 2nd CHannel & even though in Windows it set to use DMA if Aviable ... no matter how many times i restart it runs in PIO. I've tried to uninstall the channel & the drive itself still no results.

I installed the Via Drivers becuz the LiteOn would start crappin out on my rips. Usually i get about 2x - 7x & then on this one cd it just died... DvD Decryptor would just sit & do nothing. Then when i tried to reboot & rip it again i get about 1.2x & my system would have a very high load such that i coudlnt do nething else.

This happens even though i uninstalled the CHannel ...

any thoughts?

I use a computer that has a LiteOn dvdrom drive also. (although I can't remember the version of the drive right now) All of the symptoms that you've discribed have happened to my drive a while ago. I am nearly certain that the drive is failing. My drive doesn't read anything very well anymore. The drive has now been removed because it was having enough problems that half the time it wouldn't recegnize the drive when booting.
So, I am pretty sure what you are seeing is the begginning of the end for your drive. You might try and see if you have a warrenty on it still.

I've had that same problem before the occured. My Bios would list LTD-166S as 0 ... per the ATA interface i believe while my HD would show 100, & my dvdrw & cdrw would both have a 33 next to it.

In Windows, the liteon woudlnt read nething eihter so I took it back & got a replacement. Same model however ... & it wokrs as in it reads discs, ... but just dvd ripping is extremely slow & resource intensive.

Did you set DMA enable in the BIOS as well?

Is it XP?
after 6 or 8 read errors XP resets the read mode to PIO and you can't then set it to DMA.
Uninstall the IDE controller and reboot to have it pick it up again. then set it to DMA.

Windows 2000 falls back to PIO when it detects a few DMA errors. This configuration is then written to the registry and remains over subsequent reboots..
Open the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

In 0001 or 0002 subkey (depending on whether the device is on primary or secondary channel) find MasterIdDataCheckSum or SlaveIdDataCheckSum (depending on whether your CDR is configured 'master' or 'slave').

Delete the value and reboot. Windows 2000 will re-detect the drive's DMA support

To check on DMA modes and reset:

Open Control Panel, and then follow these steps to configure the DMA/PIO settings for a controller:
Double-click Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management.
Click System Tools, and then click Device Manager.
Click to expand IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
Click the specific controller for which you want to configure DMA/PIO settings.
Click the Advanced Settings tab.
In the Transfer Mode box, click either PIO Only or DMA if available.
