Xvid-playback in future

Ok, i have two questions about playback of Xvid:

1. I've heard, using unstable versions of Xvid (I'm using Koepis 08032003) and some of the new features could lead to movies, which may not be playable or compatible to further stable versions of XVid and can't be played any more then. Right? Better take stable v. to be sure?

2. I think my DivX-encoded movies look great with fast changing pictures or fast motion of things in it. The result of Xvid is a real fantastic looking blurless picture with pictures without motion. But especially in cartoons, animated and fast moving things get unsharp and become much blur. But I can configure my Xvid mpeg-4 video-decoder in a way, this disadvantage becomes a little bit less present as before (activating deblocking, etc.). My question relates on hardware-players in future - Maybe such a configurable decoder would be missing, and my Xvid-movies look bad again in motion...
The new Kiss DP-450 plays mpeg4 and there are many firmupdates... so I look foward to have similar options one day, when I play my movies away from any 'real' computer. So do you think, DivX would be a safer way to play good looking movies on a hardware-player?

(I use Xvid with 2-pass and 6-ultra high, h.263, Qpel, Chroma, GMC, b-frames (3/100/200), Quant. 2/6/2/16)

Sorry for wastig your time... newbie... but I have to ask my silly questions... want to know if I not better take DivX until Xvid 1.0 is out... :confused:

A good solution would be to play the video using different decoder (ffdshow, divx) and if it's ok, you can be reasonably confident that it's indeed mpeg4.

It is true that some of the new Xvid options are not playable by actual hardware players, but it happens the same with some divx features like qpel or GMC. Maybe that future players support them, maybe not (I really hope they do)

I think it is not a question of divx vs xvid, but a question of knowing which features are supported by hardware players and being careful.

Anyway you should be aware about the risk of using any unstable software.

I've read, the Kiss-player already supports GMC for DivX with latest firmware. I want to buy this player soon - that was the reason for me posting here. I'll may be able to encode excellent movies with new Xvid-features and new unstable versions, but I think it's probably better to make compromises and to use stable versions of Xvid or DivX, and eventually rather switch off Qpel and GMC.

Kiss says not much about Xvid, but DivX is supported with GMC, and Kiss points to the fact, that qpel for DivX is coming soon...

so it seems to be also a question of DivX against Xvid... @RoberD2D

I like Xvid, so I'll do some tests with my kiss-player soon and I hope that Kiss will not only look after good firmware for DivX-playback, but for Xvid too.

Yeah, I've got the Kiss DP-450 for a few days now. Couldn't resist at at price of 299€... (non-europeans: about 300$).

And yes, I'm happy with it. I've updated to firmware 2.6.5 and the player seems really to be able to read DivX5 with GMC. It still refuses DivX with Qpel and DivX3.11, but I think that's just a question of time. I tried one Xvid-movie, was ok, but I haven't made more tests about compatibility with new Xvid-features. I will do them later and post them.

Quality is fantastic, or seems to be... My TV is the bad factor... with 50/60Hz and 55cm size. Sound is great too, btw, the player really plays ogg-Vorbis and VBR-mp3 without any problems! Fantastic...

Watching this new information I agree that there may be some problems with fancy options in Xvid, but if Kiss-player supports Xvid I am quite sure that it will support it with GMC and Qpel as soon as they are stable. Think that Divx GMC an Qpel will be supported before because they are stable (Supposedly. They changed qpel form 5.0.2 to 5.0.3).

About the possible future incompatibilities of unstable Xvid features, there is of course a risk.

To finish: Does anyone know if one of this players supports (or will ever) OGM files?

Xvid features are different from DivX ones. Xvid GMC works better than DivX GMC and BFrames too (Xvid can use more Bframes while Divx just 1).

To keep DivX compatibility, you should try to use FourCC DX50, and don't use GMC, QPEL and Modulated Quantizzation. Also check the B frames DivX compatibility.

I'm not so happy to spend money for such player. I'll wait for a REAL MPEG 4 Advanced Profile player (Advanced so H.264, not Advanced Simple).

Well i think if u wait for a year u can pick up a amd1000 for $300 with tv out card and op out sound card.

Paint the box black to match the juke box and slap it beside the tv with a remote mouse n ur rockn.

Why take mp3 n create wav to play in a cd player kind of logic i guess.

However play back compat is always a question which i think none of the dev. will commit to.

Why don't you just use a hacked Xbox with Xbox Media Player to play back your XviD-files. The Xbox Media Player uses the XviD-decoder (or ffdshow or whatever you want it to...) so it can play back GMC and Q-Pel without any problems. The Xbox will cost you 200$ and a selfmade modchip will come to maybe 5$, so you're even cheaper than with the KISS-Player, and you get a lot more options with it...

and Bill Gates said teh Xbox is unhackable at 2048 encrytion ha.. But i mod'd my ps2 to watch Divx movies also.. I have a friend who streams DivX movies downstair's to his HDTV and it work's like a dream so a hack'd XboX is better then buying the Kiss player (price wise).. but that's just my 2 1/2 cents..
