Folks,

I have just received an e-mail from Visible Lights, with the news below. Anyone with experience with this "Basic" version? Is it any better than Lite, or what is it missing from the full SP, that one may not want to miss? I think if it is a usable version, than it might solve many people's "problem"

Cinema Craft Encoder Basic is a powerful, production level software MPEG-1/MPEG-2 offline encoder that was developed with the non-linear editor in mind. AVI and Quick Time files can be quickly compressed to high quality, MPEG-1 for CD-ROM or internet or MPEG-2 for DVD. Cinema Craft Encoder Basic supports Constant Bitrate (CBR) and Variable Bitrate (VBR) encoding, inverse 3:2 pulldown, 16:9 encoding and much more!

Hi,

I bought this a few weeks ago and have found it excellent for what I want. It supports 2 pass VBR and DVD resolutions which I wanted. I was using TMPGENC but this is a far quicker. If you only ever used 2pass on CCE and want to go legit then this will do the job.

I fully agree with you. Today I D/L-d the test-drive, and played around with it a bit - it really does the job.

The demo actually comes with a manual, and the last page compares SP to Basic - the main difference is only in the expert settings, which would not be necessary for most of the tasks, so one can enjoy almost a "normal" CCE.

it's a great deal and it works faster & better than tmpg.

for instance, cce can deal with very difficult scenes of fast motion combined with fast screen fades. tmpg has a hard time with these!

The one thing that is missing is the ability to change Matrices. This really makes a difference on file size and quality.

results are still much better than tmpgenc...

Does anyone know if someone is working on a matrix patcher for CCE basic. Like many people here, I am very excited by the prospect of buying a workable version of CCE for a very reasonable price. I'm glad Custom Technology have finally made the pragmatic move to embrace the lower end of the market. I wouldn;t mind betting that they end up making more money from their 'Basic' product than they ever have or will from their 'SP' version! :)

I am literally about to jump in and buy this encoder, but I won't do so until I know I can patch the matrices (with mb1's great DV matrix, to name but one).

Anyone know the score on this? I'd love to hear from you!

Does this CCE basic allow you to choose the field order for type B dv video. I know that previous versions did not handle type b videos correctly. Has this changed in CCE basic. I dont see in any of the screenshots where it lets you set the field order.

No, I don't think Custom Technology have addressed the issue yet with Basic, either. It really confuses the hell out of me that Custom Tech have developed the world's best software MPEG2 encoder, yet they simply cannot be bothered to fix such an outrageous, glaringly-obvious, problem, particularly as their product will be largely used by small companies and production firms who will have DVcam or MiniDV as their source material. It's just so bizarre, that they don't deal with the issue!

My current position on this matter is that (IMHO) it is best to deinterlace first, using AVIsynth. I am fully aware that many users abhore the use of deinterlacing, and indeed there are sound technical reasons for not deinterlacing. However, on balance, I think it's currently the best option if you are using Cinemacraft with interlaced source material. Once Custom Tech address the issue (if they ever address it!!), I will cease deinterlacing and encode interlaced output.

(see here for a little discussion on deinterlacing with AVIsynth and CCE: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=50383&perpage=20&highlight=trilight%20deinterlace%20avisynth&pagenumber=1 - there's loads of more specific threads on the topic, but I'm too tired to search them out, having just finished my night shift!)

I have also purchased this version VisibleLight, but I cannot use it with DoCCE4U to do quality backups using the "Big3" guide because DoCCE4U does not recognize it as a valid application - Is there a guide showing you how to do the same thing as the "Big3" guide, but only using CCE Basic instead of SP? I know that DoCCE4u is an automator for many of the options of CCE SP, but perhaps there is a way to bypass DoCCE4U completely and manually enter whatever DoitFast4U is telling DoCCE4U to do.

No. You'll have to ask the authors of "The Big 3" to add support for CCE Basic.
