I've been playing around for some time now with AVI's trying to make SVCD's. Bottom line, your guides don't work for me. I obviously need help with the basics. Like installing drivers, or codecs, things of that nature. Because I get an error with almost every single program I use from this site. How do I know if I have all the necessary codecs installed? I'm trying to figure out how to convert dvd-ripped movies which are in .avi format into SVCD's so I can watch them on my standalone dvd player. Now, I thought you just used TMPG, but i followed the guide and the aspect ratio was screwed up. The original avi file that I converted was 640x272, and when i try to use TMPG to convert it it forces me to go to 480x480, and there is absolutely no way to change it. Your guides don't say how to fix this problem, as if it never happens. Another thing, I attempted to combine the two avi files into one large one and that didn't work. I followed the guide using Nandub and it said the data formats were different. Also, in the guide it says to enter a small value into the offset. Why couldn't someone just define "small value"? To me, small is 10^-20. To someone else small could be 10. SoI guess I'm looking for some help in making the movie Road To Perdition (2 avi files) into 2 or 3 SVCD's with chapters and stuff like that. Can anyone out there spare some time to help me? I'm kinda getting frustrated with these guides cause they're too old. Thank you

Well first of all the SVCD Standard Resoution is 480x480. So you have to resize to that resolution. Also your nandub thing is because the 2 AVI files are proably different. If one has a different FPS you can't combine them.

Hi and welcome to the forum-

As Hiro2k says, SVCDs are ordinarily 480x480 (for NTSC resolutions). Black bars should be added above and below the video to keep the Aspect Ratio. And if you say the guides are too old, then perhaps you haven't yet seen Doom9's AVI2SVCD Guide (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvd2svcd-avi.htm), as it's only a month old.

Joining 2 avis can be tricky sometimes, but in your case I don't see why you really need to. Just make a 2 CD SVCD for your first try, one CD for part 1 of the movie, and the second using part 2. Walk before you run. :)

How do I know if I have all the necessary codecs installed?

If you can play the .avi, then you have the necessary codec.

I think I figured out how to resize the SVCD window before encoding, btu i let it encode last night whle i slept and awoke to a streem reading error. Somethign about MPEG was written. And I know I don't need to combine these particular avi's but I still want to knwo how to do it. Also, the guide you sent me to, I checked it out. It doesn't work. I tried loading my avi into DVD2SVCD and it just wouldn't take it. "Couldn't locate decompresor for format 'div3'" So you see I'm done before I can even start. I checked with GSpot and both files are the exact same as far as resolution and fps. It also says it uses a div3 codec for video and it says I have it installed. So who knows why DVD2SVCD won't take it. Thanks for the help though guys, I appreciate it.

Hi-

I came across something that relates to your problem:

So, maybe install an older version, if you have or can find one, or wait a bit until the problem is corrected.
