converting xvid to mpeg2

hi people, im a beginer at this stuff, but was just wandering if anyone could help me? im trying to convert xvid to mpeg2 but im strugging my encoder is always reporting buffer erorr or something like that, it converts divx fine can anyone help? do i need a new encoder? any suggestions would be greatly appreicated.
